    Abstract: A tube forming machine for making a tube from a sheet is disclosed. The forming rolls of this invention include various V-shaped rolls at least some of which are used as part of a three-point bending technique. The three-point bending technique entails the use of a V-shaped bottom roll and a narrow top roll. The sheet is shaped running the sheet through a gap between the narrow top roll and the V-shaped bottom roll. The technique allows a wide variety of tubing to be made from the same set of forming rolls, because the curvature obtained in a sheet can be varied by opening or closing the gap. A V-shaped forming roll disclosed herein is also used at a pinch roll stand with a second complementary V-shaped roll. The pinch roll stand of this invention creates an initial V-shaped sheet which facilitates the threading of the sheet at the start of a forming operation. Brimmed rolls are also disclosed.

    Abstract: A weld bead cutter mechanism continuously planes weld beads projecting from the seam weld zone of an electric seamed steel pipe. The weld bead cutter mechanism fits into an assembly line for manufacturing electric seamed steel pipe right after equipment which continuously molds sheet metal and welds the seam. The weld bead is planed off from the steel pipe by a planing blade, bent by a guide shoe fixed to the planing blade holder, and automatically guided through a groove in a bead guide to a rotary bead chopper. The weld bead is then chopped into small pieces as the rotary bead chopper chops it against a stationary blade. The distance between the planing blade and the rotary bead chopper is minimized by the use of the guide shoe and bead guide, which ensures a stable weld bead movement. The weld bead cutter mechanism operates without requiring manual guidance of the weld bead, which greatly reduces the risk of a labor accident.

The apparatus includes a cutting or shearing assembly comprising a die-set which having a cutting blade. The apparatus has a controller which calculates the maximum cutting time available, and the press assembly is instructed to rotate at the slowest rate possible, depending upon the line velocity. By causing the cutting blade to move as slowly as possible through the tubing, the life of the cutting blade is prolonged.

    Abstract: The invention is embodied in a tube cutting station in a tube producing mill. The cutting station includes a rotating press assembly and an axially moving cutting assembly. The cutting assembly is accelerated axially to a velocity which matches that of the tubing being produced. Once the cutting assembly reaches the same velocity as the tubing line, the press assembly can cause downward movement of a cutting blade through the tubing. The press assembly of the present invention is alternately rotated in opposite directions to maximize the rotational extent and time available for acceleration and deceleration of the press assembly, and therefore enables the use of lightweight drive motors. Slower acceleration and deceleration also reduces wear on components used to drive and stop the press assembly.

    Abstract: An apparatus for continuously producing electric-welded steel pipes by continuously supplying coiled strips as connected to one another by welding, progressively forming the strip into a tubular shape and high-frequency welding the opposed edges of the strip to form a seam. To produce required small quantities of steel pipes having varying diameters and wall thicknesses, a group of roll assemblies is replaceable by another group within a short period of time. Groups of forming, welding or sizing rolls are mountable on a polygonal bed which is lockable in position after rotation. For replacement, the bed is rotated by a hydraulic motor to bring the desired group of rolls to the proper position quickly.

    Abstract: An apparatus for use in a tube manufacturing plant wherein a coiled strip is made into a continuous tube. The tube is fed to the apparatus at a given speed and severed into a specified length with minimized errors in accordance with the contemplated use by a cutting assembly traveling in synchronism with the feed of the tube. When the speed of the cutting assembly matches the speed of the tube, a ram is lowered from above by a crank assembly to cause a notching blade and a cutoff blade to cut the tube without dimples. The ram is elongated and supported by a plurality of crankshafts which are adapted for synchronous rotation optimally by a synchronizing link. For dimpleless cutting, the notching blade is revolved and thereby moved at an increased speed to form a deep and wide notch in the tube.
