Patent number: 6444329Abstract: The present invention is related to a method of preserving plywood, particle board and similar wood composite products made from wood pieces/particles and a binder used to adhere such wood pieces/particle together against rot and mould decay. According to the invention, the preservative of the wood material is a complexing agent which is capable of binding transition group metals and is admixed into the binder used in the manufacture of said wood composite products prior to the formation of said product. The invention also concerns a binder composition, which contains a polymer resin as its adhesive component and a complexing agent, particularly an aminotetracarboxylic acid or a salt thereof, by approx. 1-30 wt.-% as the preservative of the wood material, and a method of producing said binder composition. Tests performed on faced plywood indicated that a water-soluble, environmentally safe complexing agent offers a white rot resistance which is superior to conventional preservatives commonly used today.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1998Date of Patent: September 3, 2002Assignees: UPM-Kymmene Oy, Koskisen Oy, Metsalitto OsuuskuntaInventors: Markku Lehtonen, Markku Lähteenmäki, Anne-Christine Ritschkoff, Jaakko Korpela

Patent number: 5806706Abstract: The invention concerns a container (100) which is made of a tubular material (111), which is meant for bulk goods, and which comprises at least an outer wall (112), a bottom portion (114) and possibly a top portion. In the interior of the container (100), a cylindrical reinforcement part (113) has been fitted, which has been fixed to the container (100) so that, at the same time, the cylindrical reinforcement part (113) forms at least a part of the bottom (114) of the container. The height (S) of the cylindrical reinforcement part (113) is by the lower portion (113a) of the cylindrical reinforcement part (113) higher than the filling height (H) of the container (100).Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1997Date of Patent: September 15, 1998Assignee: UPM-Kymmene OyInventor: Erkki Koskinen

Patent number: 5582871Abstract: The present invention is related to a method for preserving wood against undesirable reactions caused by microorganisms. The invention also concerns wood preserved against molds, blue-stain fungi and rot fungi. According to the method, the wood being preserved is treated with a substance capable of inhibiting the growth of microorganisms, whereby said substance is penetrated into the wood at least essentially deeper than superficially. According to the invention, such a substance used in the method is a complexing agent, e.g., EDTA, which is capable of binding transition metals contained in the wood, whereby the complexing agent is fast impregnated into the wood in a water-based solution, and subsequent to the impregnation step, the complexing agent impregnated into the wood is precipitated from the aqueous phase. The complexing agent can be precipitated by, e.g., lowering the pH of the wood, or alternatively, altering the temperature of the wood after the impregnation step.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1994Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignee: Kymmene OyInventors: Petri Silenius, Liisa Viikari, Anne-Christine Ritschkoff

Patent number: 5538670Abstract: The invention concerns a method and a preservative for protecting wood against decay. According to the method wood is treated with a wood preservative capable of preventing the growth and spread of fungi, said preservative containing at least one complexing agent which binds at least a portion of those metals, typically iron and manganese, naturally occurring in wood that are essential to the growth of fungi. The complexing agents employed can be, e.g., ethylenediaminetetra-acetate, ethylene diamine-di-o-hydroxyphenylacetate a polyphospate or a siderophore produced by a microorganisms. The wood preservative used in the method is water-borne and specific to the decay fungi attacking wood.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1994Date of Patent: July 23, 1996Assignees: Kymmene Oy, Koskisen Oy, Metsalitto OsuuskuntaInventors: Anne-Christine Ritschkoff, Liisa Viikari, Leena Paajanen, Tiina Mattila-Sandholm

Patent number: 4892622Abstract: A method of and arrangement for resisting formation of undulations in a fiber/water mixture supplied onto a forming wire at an open planar wire section of a paper-making machine include establishing over the wire an air curtain extending over the full breadth thereof, in the region of which the air mass upon the wire is set in motion. The direction of movement of the air mass is the same as the traveling direction of the wire, and the velocity of the air substantially equals the speed of the wire. The air curtain commences on the planar wire section, in the machine direction, only at a given distance from a lip slice of a headbox of the machine, and the air curtain extends along the traveling direction of the web over the planar wire section over a given distance.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1987Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignees: Valmet Oy, Kymmene OyInventors: Raimo Malkki, Paavo Jaatinen, Timo Haverinen, Pekka Eskelinen, Juhani Jokinen, Vesa Vuorinen, Raimo Virta, Martti Salmivaara

Patent number: 4460415Abstract: A method for nitriding materials using a glow discharge in an atmosphere of nitrogen or gas mixture at a pressure between 1 . . . 100 mtorr (0.13 . . . 13.3 Pa). Nitriding treatment can be combined with a plasma aided coating process and the temperature control during both processes can be achieved with the aid of separate filament. Nitriding unit can be a separate rig or a part of the coating unit. The method can be used to increase the wear resistance of a work piece by increasing the hardness of its surface. Because of the low pressure used in the nitriding process the same equipment can be used to produce a separate hard and wear resistant compound or alloy coating on the nitrided surface to further increase the hardness of the uppermost surface. The main field of the method is in increasing the wear and corrosion resistance of machine parts and tools.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1982Date of Patent: July 17, 1984Assignee: Kymi Kymmene OyInventors: Antti S.
