Patents Assigned to L'Air Liquide, Société Anonyme à Directoire et Conseil de Surveillance pour l'Etude et l'Exploitation des Procédés Georges Claude
  • Patent number: 6685464
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel in a combustion chamber of a furnace or boiler are presented, the combustion normally using only air as an oxidant, part of the air entering the combustion chamber through one or more burners, and a remaining portion of air entering the combustion chamber at a plurality of locations downstream of the burners. The methods comprise injecting oxygen-enriched gas through a plurality of lances into the combustion chamber at a plurality of downstream locations, the oxygen-enriched gas injected at a velocity ranging from subsonic to supersonic, and the oxygen-enriched gas being present in an amount sufficient to provide an oxygen concentration of no more than 2% on a volume basis greater than when air is used alone as oxidant.

  • Patent number: 6685461
Abstract: To reduce the overall size of and to simplify the supply for three-tube burners, and to allow easier interchangeability with two-tube burners, the burner (Br) comprises an inlet (5) for a fuel and a fuel feed tube (2) connected to this fuel inlet, an inlet (6) for an oxidizer and two oxidizer feed tubes (1, 3) connected to this oxidizer inlet, and a control valve (7, 9) for controlling the distribution of the oxidizer between the two oxidizer feed tubes (1, 3). By means of this burner, and more specifically of the control valve (7, 9), the distribution of the oxidizer between the two oxidizer feed tubes (1, 3) may be continuously adjusted.

  • Patent number: 6647930
Abstract: A system for ammonia vapor generation includes a liquid ammonia supply source, a vapor generation tank including an inlet to receive liquid ammonia from the supply source and an outlet to discharge ammonia gas from the vapor generation tank, a first heat transfer system to cool liquid ammonia fed from the supply source to the vapor generation tank and to provide external cooling to the vapor generation tank, and a second heat transfer system to heat liquid ammonia within the vapor generation tank. The first and second heat transfer systems facilitate the discharge of ammonia gas from the vapor generation tank at a substantially constant flow rate and pressure.

  • Patent number: 6604558
Abstract: A multicomponent, ground based system for reducing the hazard of explosion of aircraft fuel in the on board tanks of aircraft. The system is adapted to provide a supply of scrubbed fuel having a low concentration of dissolved oxygen. The scrubbed fuel can be supplied from bulk storage tanks to dispensing stations nearby the aircraft loading and boarding positions at an airport. The system also includes equipment adapted to wash the ullage of the aircraft fuel tanks to remove excess oxygen above the fuel in the tanks. The system further includes a gas cleaning unit to strip excessive amounts of volatile organic compounds from gas exhausted during operation of the system thereby producing environmentally benign atmospheric emissions. The system also includes redundant sources of inert gas so that the system can continue to operate in the contingency that one of the inert gas sources temporarily ceases to operate.

  • Patent number: 6586700
Abstract: For MIG welding, either in a spray mode without current modulation or in a pulsed mode, of aluminum and aluminum alloys, with the use of a gas shield for at least part of the welding zone, the gas shield is a gas mixture consisting, by volume, of from 0.01% to 1.80% oxygen and from 15% to 98.2% helium, and any balance being argon.

  • Patent number: 6572674
Abstract: Steel work gases (blast-furnace gases, coke-oven gases, converter gases, etc.) are burnt with an exhaust gas from a gas turbine, optionally with a supply of natural gas and of air, in a postcombustion section between the outlet of the gas turbine and the inlet of a recovery boiler, the steam from which is utilized especially for producing electrical energy.

  • Patent number: 6565821
Abstract: A process and a plant for removing the gaseous fluorocompounds or fluorosulphur compounds, such as CF4, C2F6, and SF6, present in a stream of xenon and/or krypton, by permeation via one or more membranes, such as polymer membranes. The xenon and/or krypton thus produced may then be further purified or separated by cryogenic distillation. Prior to the permeation step, the other impurities, particularly the hydrocarbons, may be removed by oxidative catalysis and subsequent adsorption of the carbon dioxides and of the water produced. The xenon, the krypton and the xenon/krypton mixtures free of gaseous fluorocompounds or fluorosulphur compounds and purified by such process can be used as plasma propulsion gas, especially for satellites, or as inter-pane insulation gas for a sealed unit, particularly for double-glazing windows.

  • Patent number: 6505482
Abstract: Provided are a system and method for nitrous oxide purification, wherein the nitrous oxide product is for use in semiconductor manufacturing. The system and process involve a first sub-system having a purification tank for holding a liquefied nitrous oxide, therein; a vaporizer in communication with the purification tank to receive, vaporize and convey a nitrous oxide vapor back to the purification tank; a distillation column disposed on a distal end of the purification tank to receive a nitrous oxide vapor; a condenser disposed on the distillation column, wherein light impurities are removed and wherein a nitrous oxide devoid of light impurities is conveyed and converted into vapor in the vaporizer. A second sub-system having a first dry bed vessel is disposed downstream of the vaporizer to receive the vapor and reacting the acid gas therein; a second dry bed vessel is disposed downstream of the first dry bed vessel for removing water and ammonia in the vapor.
