  • Patent number: 6257020
Abstract: In an apparatus for the separation of air by cryogenic distillation, all of the air is compressed to a medium pressure. Next, one part of the air is compressed to an intermediate pressure and a fraction of this air is compressed to a high pressure. The high-pressure air is divided into at least two fractions and expanded in two turboexpanders, the cooled stream from the warm turboexpander being at least partially recycled into the warm end of the exchanger at a higher pressure. A liquid coming from the air separation apparatus vaporizes in the exchanger.

  • Patent number: 6254787
Abstract: Provided is a method for preparing a fluid containing size-controlled particles that is optimized with respect to use of a target fluid as a matrix fluid under conditions approximating actual conditions. In a preferred embodiment, size-controlled SiO2 particles are obtained by mixing and dispersing SiO2 starting particles having various sizes in a N2 carrier gas followed by fractionation with a fractionator. The size-controlled particles are electrostatically collected by a porous member from the carrier gas flow. Ultrasonic vibrations are then applied to the porous member while a HCl matrix fluid flows through the porous member loaded with the size-controlled particles. This causes release of the size-controlled particles from the porous member and their admixture and dispersion into the HCl matrix fluid.

  • Patent number: 6247416
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of operating a furnace (1) comprising a flue pipe (11) for discharging the smoke, means (19) of introducing ambient air into the said flue pipe (11) and a smoke extractor (16) arranged in the said flue pipe (11). According to the method, the temperature of the smoke is measured at two points (31, 33), the temperature measured at the second point (33) is subtracted from the one measured at the first point (31), the result of the subtraction is compared with a datum value &Dgr;T, and the ratio of the flow rate of fuel to the flow rate of oxidizing agent introduced into the furnace (1) is decreased when the result of the subtraction is below the datum value &Dgr;T.

  • Patent number: 6247315
Abstract: This invention is related to so-called combined cycle co-generation installations, and it addresses present concerns of the industry. Among these, combustion stability, corrosion (due to large water content in the flue gases), large heat transfer areas, and the like. In some embodiments, an additional heat exchanger is added to heat combustion air with a portion of the exhaust gases resulting from an engine, preferably a gas turbine. As a result, the efficiency of the cycle will improve, the oxidant will be enriched by above 50% oxygen, the combustion process will be enhanced, and the dimensions of the boiler may be reduced. It is considered that the combustion air will require between 10% and 80% of the total flue gas volume, more preferably between 20% and 40%. This is the portion of the flue gases sent through the heat exchanger. A control system designed to optimize the flow of the different streams is also presented.

  • Patent number: 6244071
Abstract: A process for purifying a cryogenic fluid, especially argon, helium or oxygen, containing N2O, CnHm or NOx impurities, in which the impurities are removed by bringing the cryogenic fluid to be purified into contact with particles of an adsorbent having an average size of less than or equal to 1.5 mm, preferably from 0.8 mm to 1.1 mm. A purified cryogenic fluid is then recovered which contains less than 100 ppb of impurities, preferably less than 10 ppb of impurities. This process can be used for producing ultrapure gases intended especially for the electronics field.
