Abstract: Emesis in mammals is prevented by administration of 3-alkoxy-thianaphthene-2-carboxamides in a daily dosage ranging from 50 to 500 .mu.g/kg as determined by a physician or veterinarian. When administered to dogs in a daily dosage of 250 .mu.g/kg, 100% protection is obtained against vomiting normally induced by subcutaneous administration of apomorphine.

Abstract: A tie for connecting together parts of a structure, for example a stay for suspending the deck of a bridge from a tower, is constructed so that its length can be adjusted in a simple manner with the tie in service. The tie is made up from several stressed steel tendons, enclosed in a protective sheath filled with hardened material. At its ends the sheath incorporates anchoring devices for the transfer of the pull from the tie to the structure. The sheath forms a conduit whose ends are fixed securely to the anchoring devices. The conduit is isolated, throughout its length, from the structure so as to be capable of sliding longitudinally with respect thereto. At least one of the anchoring devices includes connection means for the active part of a tensioning apparatus and also includes means for bearing against the structure. This bearing means is adjustable on the anchoring device in the longitudinal direction of the tie.

Abstract: The charging device for a blast-furnace is so constructed as to be lighter, smaller in overall size and cheaper than known devices. It is also more reliable and requires substantially less maintenance while it enables the charge distribution to be regulated. It comprises a rotating spout disposed in the blast-furnace and suspended from a tubular shaft. The spout carries a nose which is orientable in a vertical plane and has an actuating rod wich is mounted with a sealed joint to extend through the shaft. The drive and guide devices for this assembly are located outside the blast-furnace. The charge is fed to the device by two bins having a vertical axis so that there is less risk of the charge becoming excessively packed or jammed in the region of the discharge hoppers controlled by a shutter or like mechanism.

Abstract: A method of manufacture from a predetermined material, especially from a natural fibrous material and/or synthetic fibrous material of an article, in particular a sheet for printing or reproduction, which combines superior qualities of brightness, opacity, thermal stability, insolubility and lightness, said method consisting of laoding said material throughout its mass or superficially, with a filler product having a base of a methylene urea precipitate with a low degree of polymerization, obtained by the reaction of urea on formaldehyde in an acid medium.

Abstract: The heterocyclic benzamides of this invention are particularly effective for the treatment of emesis in mammals. For example, when they are administered to dogs in relatively small dosage, they afford 100% protection against vomiting. They are also non-toxic in dosages for effecting complete control of vomiting.

Abstract: A concentrated aqueous solution containing nitro compound is incinerated in a chamber to produce a hot dry vapor that is fed through a heat-exchange chamber through which the unconcentrated aqueous solution containing the nitro compounds is dripped so as to evaporate the greater portion of the water in this solution and produce the concentrate that is incinerated. The incineration is carried out at a temperature above 1000.degree.C and the hot vapors leave the heat exchange chamber in a dry state. Thereafter these hot vapors are scrubbed in a tower to remove any particulate material therefrom and are allowed to escape into the atmosphere as a nonpolluting gas.

Abstract: There is described a process for the purification of gaseous effluents containing oxides of sulphur before discharge of the gaseous effluent into the atmosphere. The process is carried out in at least two separate stages of oxidation using ozonised oxygen in the presence of a catalytic quantity of an ion of a transition metal and in a manner such that the ozonised oxygen does not contact the gaseous effluent. The ozone is generally employed in the proportion of one mole of ozone to 15 to 20 moles of impurity to be oxidised.

Abstract: A apparatus for obtaining monoperoxy sulphuric acid from hydrogen peroxide and sulphuric acid is disclosed. Hydrogen peroxide in the form of an aqueous solution with a concentration ranging from 35 to 100 percent and either concentrated sulphuric acid or fuming sulphuric acid are added simultaneously to a reaction vessel. The temperature of the reaction is maintained in the range -10.degree.C to +80.degree.C and the supply of the hydrogen peroxide and sulphuric acid to the reaction vessel is controlled so that the generation of the monoperoxysulphuric acid occurs when required and the quantity thereof produced is adjusted according to the quantity thereof required for reaction with another reactant, for example a pollutant, the concentration of the monoperoxysulphuric acid being substantially constant.
