  • Patent number: 4501135
Abstract: A system for sensing tensile stress in a metal sheet being stretch formed between gripping jaws in a stretch press. Reaction force of the stressed sheet causes elastic deformation of each jaw, and this deformation is detected by movement of a light beam emitted from a source secured to the jaw. A photosensor output signal related to light-beam movement is correlated with a second signal representing sheet strain or elongation to detect when the sheet has been tensioned to the yield point.
