Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a cosmetic composition for controlling perspiration and odor. Despite being free of volatile silicones—which have garnered a bad reputation due to their ecotoxicity and bioaccumulability in aquatic species—the composition of the instant disclosure replicates the textural and sensorial benefits provided by the use of volatile silicones like cyclotetrasiloxane, cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane.

The cosmetic composition includes an aqueous phase and an oil phase. The aqueous phase includes a hydrating agent at a concentration, by weight, of about 1% to about 50%. The oil phase includes a silicone polymer, an emulsifying crosslinked siloxane elastomer, a hydrophobic silica and a co-emulsifier. The emulsifying crosslinked siloxane elastomer is at a concentration, by weight, of about 3%-20%, based upon weight of the composition. The hydrophobic silica is at a concentration, by weight, of about 0.1%-5%, based upon weight of the composition. The co-emulsifier is at a concentration, by weight, of about 0.01%-1%, based upon weight of the composition. The cosmetic composition converts from an emulsion to a plurality of droplets upon rubbing.

Compositions according to the disclosure have high SPF values without requiring high overall amounts of UV filtering agents, and without requiring the use of oxybenzone. The oil stabilizing component includes one or both of an amphiphilic compound or a surfactant having an HLB of 13 or greater added to the aqueous phase. The oil-in-water emulsion has an increased water load relative to water-in-oil emulsions without having an increased viscosity.
