Abstract: A differential sensor unit precisely monitors ambient pressure within a confined space, such as blood pressure or intracranial pressure of a human patient, utilizing fiber optic light guides. Three light guides pass within a pneumatic line into one end of a rigid cylindrical envelope which may be inserted into a vein or artery or implanted in the skull. The other end of the envelope is bounded by a flexible membrane. Of the external ends of the guides, one faces a light source and each of the others faces a light detector. A reflective surface is attached to the internal face of the flexible membrane.
