Patent number: 7731500Abstract: The illustrative embodiment is a simulation system for practicing vascular-access procedures without using human subjects. The simulator comprises a data-processing system and a haptics device. The haptics device provides the physical interface at which an end effector, which is representative of a medical instrument (e.g., a needle, catheter, etc.), is manipulated with respect to a haptics-device base to simulate instrument insertion. The data-processing system, by exchanging signals with the haptics device, provides a three-dimensional simulation that includes the resistive forces that a medical practitioner would experience if the simulated procedure were an actual procedure that was being performed on a real anatomy (e.g., human arm, etc.). The simulator displays the ongoing simulation and assesses the performance of its user.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 2004Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: Laerdal Medical CorporationInventors: David Feygin, Gerald Higgins, Chih-Hao Ho, Marjorie Moreau, Ned Way

Patent number: 7120954Abstract: A base headboard for supporting the back of an injured person's head has an elongated slot with teeth racks disposed on either side of the injured person's head. The headboard also comprises straps for attaching to a spine board. Two side head blocks are removably attached to the headboard using plunger-type locks that engage an elongated slot on each side of a center portion of the headboard. Each lock is engaged to a slot of the headboard through a separate elongated slot in the corresponding head block. Advantageously, a head block may be adjusted by moving the engagement of the lock along each independent slot in the headboard and head block, respectively. In addition, a head block may be rotated around its lock.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 2003Date of Patent: October 17, 2006Assignee: Laerdal Medical CorporationInventors: James Traut, Sean Phillips

Patent number: 6691703Abstract: A resuscitation device for providing a barrier between a rescuer and a patient requiring mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. This resuscitation device includes an inflatable portion which when inflated extends in the breathing direction between the rescuer and the patient so as to be placed around at least one breathing organ of the victim. An inflation member receives airflow from the rescuer to inflate the inflatable portion. In this resuscitation device, a valve assembly permits airflow from the rescuer to the patient and diverts the exhalation and body fluids of the patient from reaching the rescuer. An additional barrier member can also be provided for shielding the rescuer from the patient.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2001Date of Patent: February 17, 2004Assignee: Laerdal Medical CorporationInventors: Larry T. Patent number: 6090058Abstract: A multiple-size cervical collar is disclosed which is formed from a stiff flexible plastic material and comprises (a) a neck encircling band comprising a front portion and a back portion and (b) a mandible support formed from such plastic material. The mandible support is vertically shiftable with respect to the neck band and lockable thereto at a discrete number of positions to match standard single-sized collars and thereby accommodate various sizes of wearers to which the collar is applied.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1997Date of Patent: July 18, 2000Assignee: Laerdal Medical CorporationInventors: James R. Patent number: 5950627Abstract: A spine board having internal stiffening elements mechanically connected to an outer shell via a number of speed pins. A quantity of urethane foam fills the spaces between the stiffening elements and the shell. The speed pins permit the rotational molding of the shell about a pair of graphite reinforcing tubes, which better distributes the loads to be born among the outer shell, urethane filler, and stiffening elements, thereby increasing the life span of the board.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 1996Date of Patent: September 14, 1999Assignee: Laerdal Medical CorporationInventors: Michael Thomas Bologovsky, John Cline, Russell Ralph Mohberg, Richard Sunderland

Patent number: 5672179Abstract: An intubation device and a method of intubating a patient with an endotracheal tube is disclosed. The device comprises a housing and a flexible, tubular sheath having one end connected to the housing and a free end extending away from it. The sheath, which is adapted to fit within the endotracheal tube, also has a special light at the end of the sheath's free end for selectively providing illumination. In use, the sheath is inserted into the endotracheal tube until the light is at the end of the distal end of the tube. A clamp on the intubation device then clamps the endotracheal tube to the housing to prevent relative movement between the tube and the sheath. A tube stop is then slid along the sheath into abutting contact with the proximal end of the endotracheal tube to identify the location on the sheath corresponding to the proximal end of the tube. When the tube is properly positioned in the patient, the light will create a distinct glow visible to an observer in the area of the sternal notch.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1992Date of Patent: September 30, 1997Assignee: Laerdal Medical CorporationInventors: Geoffrey C.
