  • Publication number: 20010021831
Abstract: A hollow lumen cable is formed by helically winding inner and outer coils with the helices of each coil being in an abutting relationship and the outer coil inner peripheral diameter being less than the outer peripheral diameter of the inner coil. Preferably, each coil is multifilar. After the coils are wound, an unwinding force is applied to the outer coil and the inner coil is inserted into the outer coil to have its winding inclined opposite to that of the outer coil; and thence, the outer coil is allowed to contract to form an interference fit with the inner coil. The cable may be incorporated as part of a medical apparatus. The cable is bendable about the tight radii and has a high torque transfer resolution while having a small cable outer diameter, a relatively long life, and has a hollow lumen in which there is no structure or through which fluid, wires or medial devices may pass.

  • Patent number: 6139540
Abstract: Guidewires having a substantially permanent disposition or predispostion to assume the configuration of a coil are disclosed. The guidewire assumes a coiled configuration when not in use and a straight or substantially linear configuration when being used to place a medical device within the anatomy of a patient. Guidewires of invention advantageously reduces the likelihood that the guidewire will fall out of the sterile field during a medical procedure and become contaminated, requiring replacement. Methods for making the guidewire also are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6113576
Abstract: A thrombolysis catheter system having a fixed length infusion zone is disclosed. The invention contemplates apparatus, method and kit aspects. The apparatus, which has the capability to track a guidewire, uses a multilumen catheter to deliver radially thrombolytic agent to an infusion zone defined by one or more balloon means. In one aspect, with an occluder means, a primary lumen of the catheter is used both for catheter placement and delivery of fluid. The method discloses utilization of radiopaque indicia to place the catheter in proximity to the occlusion or diseased tissue to be treated. The kit includes a catheter of the invention in conjunction with a steerable guidewire and a tip occluder wire, either or both of the tip occluder wire and the guidewire having an enlargement on their distal tip which cooperates with a reduced diameter portion of the catheter lumen.

  • Patent number: 5678296
Abstract: A hollow lumen cable is formed by helically winding inner and outer coils with the helices of each coil being in an abutting relationship and the outer coil inner diameter being less than the outer, peripheral, diameter of the inner coil. Preferably, each coil is multifilar. After the coils are wound, an unwinding force is applied to the outer coils and the inner coils is inserted into the outer coils to have its winding inclined opposite to that of the outer coil; and thence, the outer coils is allowed to contract to form an interference fit with the inner coil. The cable may be incorporated as part of various medical systems e.g., implantable pumps or other rotatable medical apparatus. The cable is bendable about the tight radii, has a high torque transfer, a small outer diameter, and a hollow lumen through which fluid, wires or medical devices may pass.

  • Patent number: 5634897
Abstract: A catheter for insertion in body vessels for removing occlusions or obstructions such as thrombus, clot, plaque and other vascular or arterial deposits without generating distal emboli. Removal of freshly or recently formed obstructions is a preferred application. Concurrently or subsequently, suction or aspiration removal of the resulting occlusion debris is disclosed. A catheter system of this invention comprises elongate, hollow, inner and outer coaxial catheters having distal and proximal ends. The distal end of the outer catheter terminates short of the distal end of the inner catheter. The catheters may be independently movable with respect to each other. The inner catheter wall defines a central lumen which fluidically couples the proximal and distal ends of the inner catheter and through which a guidewire can pass. The central lumen has a reduced diameter distal portion which, with an occluder means (e.g., a guidewire), is adapted to restrict distal fluid delivery therethrough.

  • Patent number: 5433200
Abstract: A guide wire having a solid core wire which runs its entire length. The core wire has a proximal portion which constitutes the majority of its length and which tapers to a distal portion. The distal portion terminates in an atraumatic tip at the extreme distal end of the guide wire. In one embodiment a portion of the distal segment of the core wire adjacent the tip is flattened. The guide wire further includes an integral, flexible, flat wire coil attached to the core wire at its taper and to the core wire distal tip and running the entire distance therebetween. Lastly, the flattened wire coil has a non-metallic lubricous or hydrophilic coating on at least a portion of its exterior. In a preferred embodiment the proximal portion of the core wire tapers to a second diameter medial portion or segment which itself tapers to a third diameter distal segment.
