  • Patent number: 4865180
Abstract: A system for transferring workpieces generally vertically from a station at one height in a workpiece support or transfer device to a station at another height in another transfer device or support. The workpiece is moved vertically by an elevator which travels along a path through the stations from a point below the lower station to a point above the upper station. To smoothly and rapidly move the workpiece the elevator is accelerated and decelerated and dwells at least when picking up and depositing a workpiece. To avoid collisions, interference and the necessity of precisely synchronizing movement of the transfer and elevator, when in its fully raised and lowered positions, the elevator is clear of and does not interfere with the transfer and supports and any workpieces in the stations.

  • Patent number: 4629091
Abstract: A turret journalled on a vertical axis has a plurality of vertically spaced pockets open at their upper and lower ends and spaced circumferentially around its outer periphery. A workpiece hopper has a downwardly extending outlet lying on the circle defined by the upper ends of the pockets so when a pocket registers with the outlet, a workpiece gravitates into the pocket. A motor driven worm gear which rotates about a horizontal axis is disposed adjacent the outer periphery of the pocket such that a workpiece deposited into the pocket registering with the hopper outlet is engaged by and between a pair of adjacent convolutions of the worm gear thread. That workpiece thus forms a driving connection between the worm gear and the turret to index the turret in a work-advancing direction to a position where the next upstream pocket on the turret registers with the hopper outlet to receive another workpiece and again index the turret in the work-advancing direction.

  • Patent number: 4626159
Abstract: A loader for relatively long, flexible strips of sheet stock has a pair of parallel, generally vertically extending arms having vertically slotted upper ends. The lower ends of the arms are pivotally connected with vertically guided slide blocks. Each arm is pivotally connected intermediate its ends with a mechanism for moving the upper slotted ends of the arms in an elliptical path lying in a vertical plane. The elliptical path is such that, at one position therein, a strip of sheet stock slid off the top of a stack of such strips gravitates edgewise into the slots in said arms and, in another position, the strip in the slotted ends of the arms is deposited edgewise into vertical slots in the rails of a strip conveyor.

  • Patent number: 4600095
Abstract: A mechanical press has an elevated welding station and a workpiece conveyor extending through the press at a level spaced below the welding station. A lift mechanism below the conveyor is designed to elevate the platen with a straight line vertical motion in two successive steps to first engage a workpiece on the conveyor and then elevate the workpiece to the welding station. Thereafter the lift mechanism lowers the platen with a straight line vertical motion in two successive steps to first deposit the welded workpiece on the conveyor and then recede to its starting position. The drive for the lift mechanism gradually accelerates the platen at the beginning of each step and gradually decelerates it to a near zero velocity at the end of each step.

  • Patent number: 4551880
Abstract: A vertical workpiece cleanser and dryer which includes a pair of chain-driven pocket elevators disposed in adjacent wash and rinse towers on bases which enclose associated wash and rinse solution reservoirs. Each elevator includes a plurality of spools cantilevered from a drive chain and extending in a vertical upwardly directed reach through a solution (wash or rinse) spray zone and then through an air spray zone for removing solution from the workpiece and elevator spools. The elevator within the solution spray zone is closely encompassed by a surrounding shroud for limiting volume available for expansion of sprayed solution, and thus reducing the tendency of the sprayed solution to vaporize. Vertical orientation of the elevator and alignment of the solution and air spray zones promote downward flow of excess solution through the solution spray zone for enhanced flush-washing of the workpieces, and return of excess solution to the associated reservoir disposed therebeneath.

  • Patent number: 4534460
Abstract: A pocket conveyor, specifically a pocket elevator, in which a plurality of spools are cantilevered from an endless drive chain. The spools cooperate with each other and with stationary guide rails to form a series of pockets for conveying workpieces between feed and discharge stations. Various embodiments of the feed station include a starwheel rotating in synchronism with urging workpieces into recesses between the starwheel fingers. This guide surface has a clearance at the inlet and which cooperates with deformable construction of the starwheel fingers to prevent workpiece jam at the feed station. Another embodiment of the feed station includes a flat angulated surface for receiving workpieces by gravity and a flexible reach of chain extending at an angle toward the workpiece surface for automatically accommodating itself to workpiece availability without jamming. The discharge station includes a second starwheel with fingers which enter successive pockets and displace workpieces therefrom.
