Patents Assigned to Language Technologies, Inc.
  • Patent number: 11790029
Abstract: A system and method that converts the digital typesetting documents used in publishing to a device-specific format for electronic publishing. A “smart file and device-specific application” approach maintains the “look and feel” (design) of the source document used for print publication while typesetting for a specific device. Although this approach requires considerably more resources to create a smart file for each device-specific format, the smart file retains the unique typesetting characteristics of the printed book, is more aesthetically pleasing, and is easier to read. Furthermore, the device-specific application can render the smart file more quickly thereby eliminating any latency.

  • Patent number: 8755629
Abstract: A computer implemented system and method for composing a formatted text input to improve legibility, readability and/or print economy while preserving the format of the text input and satisfying any user selected aesthetic constraints. An information measure (IM) is assigned to each character in a language unit. Multiple different IMs are assigned to each character and combined to form a combined IM (CIM) for each character indicating the predictability of that character to differentiate the language unit from other language units. The process is repeated for at least a plurality of language units and typically until all the text input has been analyzed and information measures assigned to all of the characters.

  • Patent number: 8306356
Abstract: A computer implemented system, plug-in application and method for composing a formatted text input to improve legibility, readability and/or print economy while preserving the format of the text input and satisfying any user selected aesthetic constraints. This is accomplished by reading in blocks of text input having defined characters including letters and punctuation in a given input format. A language unit such as a lexical or sub-lexical unit, a subset of punctuation or another defined unit for a particular language is examined and an information measure (IM) is assigned to each character in the language unit indicating the predictability of that character to differentiate the language unit from other language units. Typically, multiple different IMs are assigned to each character and combined to form a combined IM (CIM).

  • Patent number: 8209601
Abstract: A text formatting system parses text and reformats it to establish optimal spacing for readability and reader comprehension. It also reduces the incidence of rivers and therefore enhances the aesthetic quality of the formatted text. The formatting applied to the text by the present invention is based on structure rules that determine key parameters of page layout including for example column width, font, font size, color, leading and kerning.

  • Patent number: 7346489
Abstract: A system analyzes text, determines phrasing and, in an exemplary embodiment, reformats the text to establish optimal spacing and related features for readability, reader comprehension and publishing economies. A neural network uses a library of text data to analyze text and determine phrases. Formatting emphasizes phrases using one or more of a plurality of techniques including word spacing, text darkness and controlling line breaks.

  • Patent number: 5809494
Abstract: A method for rapidly hashing records in a large database stored on a secondary storage device in which a set of memory-blocks are preferably established in main memory for receiving information. Each memory block is associated with a sub-range of hash values that collectively span a range of hash values derived from one or more fields of the database records. The hash values together with other information are distributed among the memory-blocks in accordance with the range of hash values. As each memory block fills, its contents are written to an intermediate file associated with the memory-block in secondary storage. The intermediate files are subsequently retrieved and the hash values stored therein are ordered. The ordered intermediate files are then written to secondary storage as a single hash table spanning the entire database.

  • Patent number: 5765130
Abstract: A barge-in detector for use in connection with a speech recognition system forms a prompt replica for use in detecting the presence or absence of user input to the system. The replica is indicative of the prompt energy applied to an input of the system. The detector detects the application of user input to the system, even if concurrent with a prompt, and enables the system to quickly respond to the user input.
