Abstract: A turret lathe is disclosed in which the turret supports a plurality of tools at a plurality of tool block locations formed thereon which are located at varying angular positions on the turret. These locations are so positioned as to maximize the number of tools supportable by the turret while still enabling all of the tools to be moved through their full cutting range without any one tool interfering with a workpiece or a workpiece supporting chuck while any other tool is operating upon that workpiece. Because the tools are located at varying angular positions on the turret, which positions are not even multiples of one another, the lathe incorporates an indexing control operable to index the turret through those varying angular arcs so as to enable any selected tool to be positioned at the tool cutting station of the machine.
Abstract: An improved spindle control mechanism for a lathe that includes, in preferred form, a rotatable control knob operably related to a plurality of spindle motor control and servo-control switches by a switch drum fixed thereto and operably connected to a spindle transmission through a control shaft by a connector link pivoted in an eccentric position at one end to the control knob and pivoted at the other end to a lever arm fixed to the control shaft. Rotation of the control knob into a forward position simultaneously translates the lathe's transmission into a forward spindle rotation position and starts the spindle drive motor. Rotation of the control knob into an intermediate stop position simultaneously stops the spindle drive motor and activates the spindle servo-control switch (which permits the spindle's rotation speed to be changed by a separate spindle servo-control mechanism, if desired).
Abstract: A dial assembly adapted to be secured to a lead screw and operative to enable measurements of a machine element effected by the lead screw to be measured in either English or Metric units of measure. The dial assembly includes two different dials interconnected by a gear train, which gear train comprises a spur gear fixed to each dial and a continuous, toothed ring or belt drivingly interconnecting the spur gears.
Abstract: A manual control system including a powered feed for a numerically controlled machine tool. The system includes a manually operable differential resolver located in the position feedback loop of the servo control system for each slide and a variable speed motor for driving that differential resolver at a controlled rate so as to effect controlled feeding movement of the slides independent of the numerical control unit.
