  • Patent number: 6772274
Abstract: A flash memory system is designed to reduce inefficiencies associated with keeping track of logical block address (LBA) to physical block address (PBA) correlation or mappmg—each logical block address generated by a host digital system and associated with data when the data is sent to be stored in the flash memory system by the host digital system. The flash memory system preferably comprises at least one flash memory device having a flash memory array, the flash memory array including a plurality, of blocks for storing data and for storing (LBA to PBA) correlation, each block having a plurality of sectors, and a controller coupled to each flash memory device, the controller including a new space manager. By removing from the space manager the task of tracking correlation between the LBA and the PBA, considerable savings in manufacturing costs and logic circuit area on an integrated circuit are achieved and design flexibility attained.

  • Patent number: 6725321
Abstract: A memory system (10) having a solid state memory (6) comprising non-volatile individually addressable memory sectors (1) arranged in erasable blocks, and a controller (8) for writing to reading from the sectors, and for sorting the blocks into “erased” and “not erased” blocks. The controller performs logical to physical address translation, and includes a Write Pointer (WP) for pointing to the physical sector address to which data is to be written from a host processor. A Sector Allocation Table (SAT) of logical adrresses with respective physical addresses is stored in the memory, and the controller updates the SAT less frequently than sectors are written to with data from the host processor. The memory may be in a single chip, or in a plurality of chips. A novel system for arranging data in the individual sectors (1) is also claimed.

  • Patent number: 6721843
Abstract: A Flash Memory Unit comprises a plurality of memory banks capable of simultaneously programming a plurality of pages into a plurality of data blocks within the respective memory banks. On start up, the Flash Memory System sends a signal to a Host. If the Host fails to respond, the Flash Memory Unit determines that the Host is a standard Host and stores data one page at a time. If the Host responds with a proper signal, the Flash Memory Unit determines that the Host is a high performance Host and stores multiple pages of data simultaneously. The high performance Host is configured to select identical LBA offsets from a plurality of Virtual Logical Blocks of User Data, and send the data defined by these Logical Block Addresses to the Flash Memory Unit for storage. The plurality of Logical Blocks of data are respectively transmitted to a plurality of RAM Data Registers, and simultaneously programmed into their respective memory banks.

  • Patent number: 6374337
Abstract: A method and circuit for fast memory access (read or write) of the data to and from a memory array is disclosed. Architecture wise, the memory array control circuit provides for at least two address latches and two page registers. The first address latch contains a first data address and the second address latch contains a second data address. The first data address is decoded first and sent to the memory array to access (read or write) the corresponding data from the memory array. When the data of the first data address is being accessed, the decoding process will begin for a second data address. When the data of the first data address has been accessed, the second data address is ready for the memory array. Thus, there can be continuous fetching from or writing to the memory array. In the preferred embodiment, there are two page registers. In a read operation, the data read from the first data address is transferred to a first page register.
