Abstract: An apparatus and method for servo control in an optical disk driver. The amount of disk eccentricity is measured, and a compensation value corresponding to the measured disk eccentricity is calculated and stored. The stored compensation value is used in the track search mode so that a more stable and precise track search operation is achieved despite the disk eccentricity caused by imperfect disk manufacturing processes or disk clamping errors. Also, when a track jump is requested during a track-following operation, the jump start point is adjusted properly, thereby reducing the time needed to complete the track jump operation, as well as reducing track jump errors.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for recording time information for digital data streams. When a received digital data stream is recorded on a recording medium such as a digital video disk, time information for searching the digital data stream is added to the digital data stream, the format of the time information being compatible with the time format of the navigation data. The time information for the recorded digital data stream can be effectively used when searching a digital data stream corresponding to a search time requested by a user, thereby enabling fast and precise search operations with no additional information.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display according to the present invention uses an organic layer treated with H2 plasma before fabricating an inorganic layer on the top of the organic layer. When forming thin film transistors (TFT) used in the LCD, an Indium Tin Oxide layer is fabricated above the TFTs and acts as a pixel electrode. When the organic layer, such as a passivation layer, is treated with the H2 plasma, an intermediate layer having an O—H bonding structure is formed to enhance bonding or attachment of an inorganic layer, such as an ITO layer, to the organic layer.

Abstract: A remote control method and system embody a graphic user interface. The present invention includes a remote controller having a touch pad and a digital television having a GUI. That is, a viewer can select a menu displayed on the digital television by using the touch pad. It is thus possible to overcome control limitations of the remote controller, namely complexity of the rapidly-developed functions of the television. In addition, the viewer can watch menus displayed on the screen of the digital television, operate the touch pad and execute a wanted control operation. As a result, the viewer can easily conveniently control the digital television through simple operations of the remote controller.

Abstract: A user interface method and apparatus for an appliance connected with a host system is disclosed. According to the user interface method, the host computer displays menus having a structure identical with a structure of menus implemented in the appliance, and provides a control command corresponding to the menu to the appliance when the menu is selected from the menus. The appliance receives the control command, and detects and executes an internal command according to the selected menu.

Abstract: A temperature-sensing device of a mobile terminal is provided. The device comprises a pulse amplitude module (PAM), a mobile station modem (MSM) having ground and temperature-sensing terminals for controlling the PAM, and an electrical circuit. The circuit comprises first and second conductors, each having first and second ends. The first end of the first conductor is connected to the ground terminal, the first end of the second conductor is connected to the temperature-sensing terminal, and the second ends of the first and second conductors are connected to each other to form a junction. With the conductors oppositely charged and the junction situated adjacent to the PAM, the temperature difference between the junction and the MSM generates an electromotive force due to the Seebeck effect.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for preventing lock-up of an LCD it is provided, in which a voltage on a pin of the LCD is monitored, it is determined whether an electrostatic discharge (ESD) has been applied to the LCD based on the monitored voltage, and the LCD is reset if an ESD has been applied to the LCD. In a preferred embodiment, the LCD pin whose voltage is monitored exhibits a voltage level change, in response to an ESD, that is greater than a voltage level change exhibited by all other individual pins of the LCD. Because the LCD is reset only when an ESD condition has been detected, periodic blinking of the LCD is prevented.

Abstract: In a dual apparatus of a communication system, and in particular to a dual apparatus and a method thereof using a concurrent write function, a PCI bridge of an active board snoops a processor bus. When a processor carries data and a control signal to the processor bus in order to change content of a memory of the active board, the PCI bridge checks whether data synchronization is required. When the data synchronization is required, the PCI bridge buffers the data and the control signal from the processor bus, and transmits them to a standby board through a PCI bus. Accordingly, the content of the memory of the standby board is changed. While the PCI bridge performs the content change of the memory of the standby board, the processor of the active board changes content of the memory of the active board. Accordingly, because a load of the processor is lowered, a performance of the processor can be improved, and accordingly data synchronization can be performed quickly.

Abstract: An efficient and low cost method for performing inter-frequency handoff in a mobile communication system is implemented in software. As a result, none of the additional hardware required by conventional handoff systems to perform a handoff operation is needed. The inter-frequency handoff method includes as an initial step extracting handoff career data. Then, a threshold value determined from the extracted handoff career data is compared with a signal strength value from a mobile station, which is engaged in a call in a first cell using a non-common frequency with a second cell where handoff is to be performed. A point in time for performing the handoff is then decided based on the comparison. Finally, handoff is executed based on the non-common frequency at the decided point in time.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a power-saving apparatus and method for a display portion of a refrigerator, and more particularly, to a power-saving apparatus and method for a display portion of a refrigerator in which brightness of the display portion is controlled only when a user utilizes the refrigerator. That is, the present invention aims to monitor whether the user utilizes the refrigerator and to control the brightness of the display portion of the refrigerator such that the display portion can be kept bright only when the user utilizes the refrigerator. To this end, the present invention is characterized in that whether the user utilizes the refrigerator or remains in the vicinity of the refrigerator is determined by using operating signals of function keys inputted by the user, a door switch, an infrared sensor and the like. Further, it is characterized in that the operation of a backlight portion is controlled in response to the result of the determination.
