Abstract: A method is provided for treating gum base to improve its resistance to oxidation without the need for antioxidants wherein air or oxygen is swept from the gum base by means of an inert gas, and the oxygen-free gum base, in particulate form, is coated with a highly oxygenated substance, such as molten sugar, sorbitol solution or hydrogenated starch hydrolysate which acts as a barrier against oxygen.The gum base produced by the above method and chewing gum containing such gum base are also provided.

Abstract: An improved compressed soft chewable tablet is provided, which may contain an antacid or other active ingredient, has good flexibility, is breakage resistant and disintegrates immediately upon chewing. The tablet of the invention is formed of particles of antacid and/or other active ingredient which are isolated from other ingredients of the tablet, preferably by admixing particles of active ingredient with particles formed of edible fat or oil absorbed on a fat-absorbing material, such as microcrystalline cellulose and blending such particles with one or more tablet bonders; the tablet also includes additional amounts of tablet bonders, flavors and other conventional tabletting aids to help in making the tablet more palatable. Upon chewing, the tablet is quickly converted to a smooth creamy non-gritty palatable emulsion.

Abstract: An improved compressed soft chewable tablet is provided, which may contain an antacid or other active ingredient, has good flexibility, is breakage resistant and disintegrates immediately upon chewing. The tablet of the invention is formed of particles of a recrystallized fatty material, such as chocolate, a bulking material such as sugar or an active ingredient, such as an antacid, bound up in the particles of recrystallized fatty material, and a direct compaction vehicle which binds the particles of recrystallized fatty material and bulking material, under compression, into a chewable tablet.

Abstract: An aerated confection, such as marshmallow or nougat, which has good stability, can be deposited or extruded, will not collapse and can be subjected to high humidity. The aerated confection is preferably sugarless and contains a hydrogenated starch hydrolysate together with a hydrogenated sugar, such as isomaltitol.

Abstract: A tobacco-flavored chewing gum is provided which does not decrease in viscosity upon chewing inasmuch as it is preferably essentially free of water-solubles, and includes gum base containing high levels of inert fillers, such as calcium carbonate or talc in amounts of at least about 50% by weight, softeners, such as lecithin, synthetic non-caloric sweeteners, such as aspartame, saccharin or cyclamates, and tobacco flavors and/or natural tobacco. The chewing gum includes at least about 10% air voids entrapped in the gum base matrix which, upon chewing, become filled with moisture causing a dramatic increase in cud volume.

Abstract: Center-filled chewing gum is provided which includes as the center fill a dispersion of a thickener, such as carboxymethyl cellulose in glycerin, the glycerin functioning as both a sweetener and carrier, and the thickener functioning to retard increase in viscosity of the glycerin.

Abstract: A hard candy having excellent shelf stability may contain at least 80% by weight fructose, such as in the form of high fructose corn syrup, and optionally, small amounts of dextrin. A method for preparing the above high fructose hard candy is also provided which employs vacuum removal of moisture to avoid degradation and discoloration and impart long shelf-life stability to the hard candy.

Abstract: A breath freshener composition is provided which may be in the form of a comestible, such as a pill, powder, tablet, pressed candy or mint, boiled candy, mouthwash, dental cream, chewing gum and the like, and which includes as its active ingredient a vegetable oil employed in combination with magnesium hydroxide or basic hydrated magnesium carbonate. The above breath freshener composition is especially effective in eliminating onion odor in the mouth and saliva. The liquid-filled chewing gum includes a solid phase and a liquid phase, the solid phase includes a gum base matrix including a network of voids or pockets laced throughout the matrix, and the liquid phase includes a liquid sweetener and/or flavor composition, such as a sweetener-flavor solution, retained in the voids or pockets, and surrounded by gum base. Upon chewing, the liquid sweetener and flavor are released into the oral cavity.A method is also provided for forming the liquid-filled chewing gum.

Abstract: A new method is provided for applying a soft flexible sugar coating to soft chewing gum pieces which method requires that a sugar coating be applied to fresh soft chewing gum substantially immediately (within 3 hours) after the chewing gum is prepared and without first subjecting such chewing gum to the normal 24 to 48 hour conditioning period. The resulting coating takes the form of a continuous soft flexible protective shell which tightly adheres to the soft chewing gum piece, locks in freshness and imparts a long-shelf life thereto. The chewing gum piece produced by the above method remains soft even after prolonged periods of storage.The coated chewing gum produced by the above method is also provided.
