Patent number: 9693044Abstract: A method for constructing a stereoscopic device is provided. A chassis with front and back openings and that forms a housing framing the front and back openings is constructed. A beam splitter constructed of substantially orthogonally polarizing material faces the back opening and is captively held to the chassis. A single phase shifting optic having a reflective surface coated by a phase shifting film on which the divergent image light is received is placed at an angle non-perpendicular to the divergent image light, such that the phase shifting optic is facing toward the front opening and is substantially parallel to the polarizing material of the beam splitter. The beam splitter and phase shifting optic are in optical alignment with each other within the chassis. A modulator sized to cover at least a portion of the front opening is positioned in front of the front opening.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 2016Date of Patent: June 27, 2017Assignee: Lightspeed Design, Inc.Inventors: Chris Ward, Robert Mueller, Kirk Melby

Patent number: 9621878Abstract: A video controller for synchronizing presentation of a plurality of images is provided. A color switching device is operable to continually select a color out of a set consisting essentially of a plurality of fundamental colors. Each fundamental color is selected for presentation for a fixed time segment. A light processing element is operable to block and permit transmission of light in each color selected by the color switching device during each fixed time segment. The light includes at least two streams of sequential images. A synch signal generator is in control of the light processing element and is configured to time presentation of the light by the light processing element and of control signals to a viewing device of the display. The presentation of the light and of the control signals is timed in synchrony with the fixed time segments only during a transition state of the viewing device.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2013Date of Patent: April 11, 2017Assignee: Lightspeed Design, Inc.Inventors: Michal Husak, Chris Ward, Robert Mueller, Joesph D. Patent number: 9494805Abstract: A stereoscopic device for recapturing light is provided. A chassis is open on front and back sides and forms a rectangular housing with top, bottom, and two sides that frame the front and back openings. A polarizing beam splitter is angled away from the back opening of the chassis and captively held by the chassis. The beam splitter is constructed of substantially orthogonally polarizing material. A phase shifting optic having a reflective surface coated by a phase shifting film is angled toward the front opening, wherein the beam splitter and phase shifting optic are in optical alignment with each other within the chassis. A modulator sized to cover the front opening is positioned in front of the chassis.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2014Date of Patent: November 15, 2016Assignee: Lightspeed Design, Inc.Inventors: Chris Ward, Robert Mueller, Kirk Melby

Publication number: 20120300047Abstract: A system and method for improving stereoscopic images produced by a projecting device containing a single chip DMD, seen through an eye-switching device, such as a pair of liquid crystal (LC) shutter glasses. The system and method are used with a video projector used with a multiple-color, color switching device The color switching device produces Blue, Red and Green lights and at least one non-critical segment. A color sequencing firmware resident in the video projector is used to align a non-critical segment in front of the projector's main light source during the eye-switching device's unstable transition phase. If the non-critical segment is transmissive, the firmware controls the DMD so light is discontinued. If the non-critical segment is non-transmissive, light is physically blocked. If the non-critical segment is electronically defined, the firmware directly controls the DMD to discontinue the transmission of light for the duration of device's unstable transition phase.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 28, 2011Publication date: November 29, 2012Applicant: Lightspeed Design, Inc.Inventors: Michal Husak, Joseph D. Patent number: 8066377Abstract: A system and method for improving stereoscopic images produced by a projecting device containing a single chip DMD, seen through an eye-switching device, such as a pair of liquid crystal (LC) shutter glasses. The system and method are used with a video projector designed to be used with a multiple-color, color switching device, such as a color wheel. The color wheel includes at least three critical color segments. The color wheel may also physically include or be electronically re-defined to include at least one non-critical segment. A color sequencing firmware resident in the video projector is used to align a non-critical segment in front of the projector's main light source during the eye-switching device's unstable transition phase. If the non-critical segment is transmissive, the firmware controls the DMD so that light is discontinued.
