  • Patent number: 5851208
Abstract: An elongated, rotatable surgical cutting instrument having a rotatable cutting element at the distal end of a bendable non-rotating elongated outer member. The instrument enables operation of various cutting devices such as a bendable rotatable burr. In one embodiment the cutting element is rotatably, but irremovably attached to the distal end of the outer member. The proximal end of the cutting element is then releasably attached to the distal end of a flexible coupling which in turn is attached to the distal end of an elongated inner member. The assembly is then rotatably secured within the outer member so the cutting element may be rotated via the inner member. An aspirating lumen extends through the cutting element, the flexible coupling and the inner member and the inner member may be removed from the outer member without detaching the cutting element therefrom. In another embodiment, the cutting element is removable from the outer member when the inner member is removed.

  • Patent number: 5843110
Abstract: A ring blade and drive system, and method of using same, for harvesting bone-tendon-bone ligament grafts having substantially cylindrical bone plugs. The ring blade disclosed is a circular ring having a predetermined arcuate gap formed in its periphery. The drive system includes a blade holder to peripherally hold the ring blade and a fixed-center oscillating mechanism to oscillate the ring blade about its axis within a predetermined arcuate range of motion. The ring blade structure enables the production of a substantially cylindrical bone plug of unlimited length. Harvesting of a bone-tendon-bone ligament graft is facilitated with the ring blade and method disclosed which enables the ring blade to be placed partially around a tendon segment to create bone plugs aligned with the tendon fibers included in the defined tendon segment. The cuts into the bone may be initiated into the bone at either end of the tendon segment from the tendon side through to the exterior of the bone to which the tendon is attached.

  • Patent number: 5836867
Abstract: An endoscope coupler apparatus and method includes a sealed chamber and a lens assembly movable within the chamber for optically adjusting an image to be received by a video camera. The optical adjustment may be, for example, a focus adjustment or a zoom or orientation adjustment, etc. In a preferred embodiment, spaced permanent drive magnets located in an outer rotatable frame situated outside of the chamber are magnetically coupled with respective permanent driven magnets secured to an inner rotatable frame within the sealed chamber. The outer frame is rotatable but not longitudinally movable about the chamber and rotates the drive magnets and, therefore, the driven magnets. The inner frame is secured to a rotatable cylindrical housing which engages a lens assembly. Rotation of the driven magnets and the cylindrical housing moves the lens assembly longitudinally in response to rotation of an adjustment ring attached to the outer frame.

  • Patent number: 5833702
Abstract: A process for simultaneously shaping and sharpening a cutting widow at the distal end of a tubular member of a rotary blade assembly. The assembly is provided with a stationary elongated outer tube, having a cutting window at its distal tip and includes a rotatable elongated inner tube having a cutting means at its distal tip. The window in the outer tube has a curvilinear profile defined by a peripheral rim surrounded entirely by a land surface which is inclined relative to the rim. The inclination of the land produces an area which tapers from a full thickness, where the land is adjacent to the cylindrical wall of the outer tube, to a sharp edge around the periphery of the window. The curvilinear window is produced by a manufacturing process which creates the window opening with a sharpened periphery at the same time that the land surrounding the opening is inclined.

  • Patent number: 5833246
Abstract: A centrifugal chuck for a surgical handpiece is adapted to automatically engage a surgical instrument so it may be driven by the handpiece. The centrifugal chuck comprises a pivotable trunnion body situated within a hollow drive shaft, the trunnion body having a throughbore coaxially aligned with the axis of the hollow drive shaft in order to receive the shaft of the surgical instrument. The trunnion body is secured to a pair of lever arms symmetrically situated about the exterior of the drive shaft, the lever arms extending in opposite proximal and distal directions from the pivotable attachment of the trunnion body to the drive shaft. Rotation of the drive shaft causes radially outward movement of the lever arms thereby misaligning the throughbore of the trunnion body relative to the drive shaft in order to frictionally engage the shaft of the surgical instrument.
