  • Patent number: 5511380
Abstract: Ultra-pure nitrogen is produced in a process comprising separating air in an integrated plurality of columns. A nitrogen-enriched stream is elevated in pressure and thereafter contaminants and impurities are removed in an auxiliary column system which allows for the main column to efficiently operate below the required nitrogen product pressure, while including an ability to optionally obtain a normal purity nitrogen and a liquid nitrogen product. The process and installation remains efficient and economical in a relatively small scale installation to produce extremely pure nitrogen product.

  • Patent number: 5329774
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for separating C.sub.4 hydrocarbons from a feed comprising a gaseous mixture. The feed is cooled and partially condensed in a plurality of successive stages of condensation and phase separation. A gaseous overhead from each separation stage is further cooled and supplied to the next separation stage and the liquid separated from each stage is used to cool the gas. Further refrigeration is supplied to the gas to effect the condensations by indirect heat exchange with a closed cycle refrigerant subjected to a compression/expansion cycle. The feed undergoes no compression and no abrupt expansion during the separation, so that the feed undergoes a pressure decrease due only to friction of the passage of the feed through the apparatus. The pressure loss is no more than about 20 psi. The temperature of the feed is maintained below 150.degree. F. at all times, to prevent polymerization of 1,3-butadiene.

  • Patent number: 5271231
Abstract: A method of liquefying a low-boiling gas, in which gas is compressed to a high pressure, is cooled in heat exchange structure and is isenthalpically expanded to condense a portion of the same to liquid. The liquid being separated from residual gas and the residual gas is used to cool the heat exchange structure and is then recycled. A portion of the gas is compressed to an intermediate pressure between the high and low pressures, is isentropically expanded at a first temperature and is used to cool a relatively warm portion of heat exchange structure and is then recycled. A portion of the high pressure gas is isentropically expanded at a second temperature and used to cool a relatively cool portion of the heat exchange structure and then again isentropically expanded at a third temperature to that low pressure and returned through the heat exchange structure to cool the same and is then recycled.

  • Patent number: 4867772
Abstract: A process and apparatus for the ultrapurification of cryogenic low boiling liquified gases such as oxygen and nitrogen which contain trace impurities. The impure gas is introduced into a first distillation column and is substantially at its liquid-gas equilibrium temperature at the pressures within the first distillation column. Here the gas is separated by distillation into a first vapor fraction containing low boiling point impurities and a first liquid fraction containing high boiling point impurities. The first vapor fraction is withdrawn and introduced into a second distillation column. The first vapor fraction is substantially at the liquid-gas equilibrium temperature at the pressures within the second distillation column. Here the vapor fraction is separated by distillation into a second vapor fraction containing high boiling point impurities and a second liquid fraction free of trace impurities which is withdrawn as product.
