Abstract: A microbial fuel cell is provided that includes a cell housing, a membrane dividing an internal chamber of the cell housing into an anode compartment and a cathode compartment, an anode including a graphite and first microorganisms contained in the anode compartment, a cathode including graphite and a second microorganisms contained in the cathode compartment, and a watercourse communicating the anode compartment and the cathode compartment with one another. A system including at least one microbial fuel cell and methods of operating the microbial fuel cell and system are also provided.
