    Abstract: A wheel hub assembly for a motor vehicle wheel having: a bearing including an outer bearing ring adapted to be affixed with the vehicle chassis and an inner bearing ring having the vehicle wheel mounted thereon; a rotary joint including an inner joint member and an outer joint member rotatively fixed with the inner bearing ring; and a stepped bore provided in the inner bearing ring opening toward the rotary joint and receiving the outer joint member therein. The outer joint member has on its side facing the bearing a centering surface engaging within the stepped bore to provide a centering effect between the outer joint member and the inner bearing ring. The centering surface simultaneously serves as a welding face for a welded joint formed by a low heat welding process between the inner bearing ring and the outer joint member. The outer joint member is also formed with a surface cooperating with the stepped bore of the inner bearing ring and spaced a distance from the inner bearing ring.

    Abstract: A sealing boot for a universal joint including a pair of terminal portions each engaged with different parts of the joint to provide a protective seal therefor. One of the terminal portions is structured as a non-return valve to permit fluid flow from the interior of the sealing boot to alleviate excess pressure. The non-return valve is formed by an annular collar having channels defined therein with a resilient sleeve extending exteriorly of the sealing boot to be lifted from engagement with a part of the universal joint when pressure within the channel exceeds a specified limit. A resilient sleeve extending interiorly of the sealing boot may also be provided so that atmospheric air may be permitted to enter the boot for pressure equalization.

The universal joint includes an outer joint member coupled with one of the shafts and an inner joint member coupled with the other shaft. A sealing boot is operatively coupled to seal the interior of the universal joint and the sealing boot is releasably attached with the outer joint member of the universal joint. A neck portion of the sealing boot engages the steering shaft in releasable connection therewith but axially slideably movable relative thereto.

A cage between the joint members is provided with a number of radial openings to retain the balls in a plane which bisects the angle between the inner and outer joint members formed when the joint is bent and which is at right angles to the cage. The balls engage surfaces of the radial openings which are parallel with the plane and at least on one side of each ball there is provided a supporting plate which engages the ball by a concave spherical surface or a ball groove and which contacts a surface of the cage opening with a planar face. The balls may also be retained within the openings by means of a supporting ring which may be fixed in the opening or capable of movement therein.
