Patent number: 7014730Abstract: Cards may be singly fed along a primary lane so that a batch of cards is fed along the primary lane. One or more cards may be selectively diverted from the primary lane to a secondary lane such that only some of the batch of cards are diverted. The cards from the batch in the primary lane and the secondary lane are then affixed to a carrier so that each card of the batch is affixed to the carrier. The diversion may be achieved by a reciprocating gate between the primary lane and the secondary lane and a conveyor running on a bias between the primary lane and the secondary lane at the downstream location of the gate.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2002Date of Patent: March 21, 2006Assignee: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventor: Edward J. Patent number: 6776409Abstract: A batch sheet feeder has an upstream first conveyor section arranged to convey sheets singly in a downstream direction to a downstream second conveyor section. The second conveyor section has an upper second conveying section and a lower second conveying section forming a gap therebetween. The gap is largest at an upstream end of the second conveyor section and diminishes in size toward a downstream end of the second conveyor section. A gate positioned proximate the downstream end of the second conveyor section selectively blocks sheets fed along the second conveyor section. In another embodiment, the sheet feeder has a sheet conveyor, sheet sensor, and visual attribute sensor. The visual attribute sensor has a field of view covering an area of the conveyor at a certain downstream location so as to sense an area of any sheet on the conveyor at this downstream location. The visual attribute sensor can compare a sensed area of a sheet at the downstream location with a stored visual attribute.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2002Date of Patent: August 17, 2004Assignee: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventor: Edward J. Patent number: 6598375Abstract: In order to fit a box lid to a box tray a pair of opposed plates are used. Each plate is pivotably mounted intermediately of its upper and lower edges such that upper edges of the opposed plates may pivot toward and away from each other. Each plate is biased to an inclined position whereat the upper edges of the opposed plates are more proximate than the lower edges of the plates. With this arrangement, a lid may be placed with respect to the pair of opposed plates such that opposed lower edges of the lid are positioned below the upper edges of said plates and at an outward side of said plates. A box tray may then be raised between the plates such that the box tray urges each of the plates away from its inclined position.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 2001Date of Patent: July 29, 2003Assignee: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventor: Paul J. Publication number: 20030059099Abstract: To recognise characters in a character set developed for magnetic ink character recognition (MICR), the characters are optically imaged as a matrix of pixels. Pixel values in each of a plurality of adjacent parallel lines of pixels in the matrix are then summed to obtain a line total for each line. The lines of pixels may be chosen to parallel a height dimension of the characters in order to eliminate skew. Thus, in the absence of skew, the lines will simply be columns of the matrix of pixels. Line totals may be compared with line total templates. Each line total template is characteristic of a character in the character set.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 27, 2001Publication date: March 27, 2003Applicant: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventor: Naofumi Tateishi

Patent number: 6491492Abstract: A shingling nip roll is added between an infeed conveyor and a reciprocating table. The nip roll slows the speed of the sheets thereby reducing bruising and buckling as sheets are ejected to the table. Further, the trailing end of a dropped sheet is overlapped by a leading end of the next upstream sheet which assists in maintaining control of the dropped sheet as it drops onto the reciprocating table.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2000Date of Patent: December 10, 2002Assignee: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventor: Edward J. Patent number: 5457941Abstract: An on-the-fly envelope stuffing apparatus has an envelope feeder comprising a pair of parallel feed belts for underlying the back panel of the envelope and a laterally aligned medial feed belt for overlying the front panel of the envelope. The medial feed belt descends below the level of the parallel feed belts in the downstream direction. An envelope fed lengthwise through the belts is bent so that the envelope flap is partially opened. This allows interposition of a flap guide to fully open the envelope. The envelope feeder dispenses the envelopes serially to an envelope conveyor. An endless tray conveyor parallels the envelope conveyor. Each tray supports an insert stack against which arms on the tray rest. As the trays move downstream in synchronism with envelopes on the envelope conveyor, each tray is cammed toward an envelope so that the arms enter the opening of the envelope.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1994Date of Patent: October 17, 1995Assignee: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventors: John D. Patent number: 5431387Abstract: A reciprocating table has a cam follower in the nature of an elongate slot extending transversely of the reciprocating path of the table. This slot receives a cam which is eccentrically mounted on a cam support wheel. The angular position of the cam support wheel is monitored by a rotary encoder and the cam wheel is driven by a bi-directional motor under microprocessor control. The microprocessor controls the motion of the cam such that an angular quadrant centred about the position of the cam defining the most extended position of the table is not used since the table is relatively insensitive to the motion of the cam within this quadrant. In contrast, the opposite quadrant extending about the most retracted position of the table is utilized so that the cam may be moved quickly to retract the table and yet the table is naturally decelerated.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1994Date of Patent: July 11, 1995Assignee: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventors: Rudy E. Patent number: 5385509Abstract: A drive train for a pulsed feed wheel has an offset cam on a continuously rotating drive shaft. The cam acts against a pendulum which rocks the input of a one-way clutch. A support arm attached to the output of the clutch terminates in a planetary gear. The planetary gear meshes with two sun gears one of which is fixed against rotation and the other of which is keyed to the output shaft. The planetary gear and sun gears are harmonic gears. Each revolution of the drive shaft pulses the output shaft through a small fraction of one revolution.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1993Date of Patent: January 31, 1995Assignee: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventor: John D. Patent number: 5090591Abstract: A dispenser for a continuous strip of articles has two grippers with cantilevered gripping arms, one gripper positioned at each side of the strip. One of the grippers grips the end article in the continuous strip of articles and moves the end article downstream to a dispensing station through the open arms of the other gripper which moves upstream to a gripping position whereas it grips the article adjacent the end article. A cutter severs the article at the dispensing station from the continuous strip and the downstream gripper opens to dispense the article. The upstream gripper now grips the end article and may move downstream through the open gripping arms of the other gripper for dispensing this next article and this process may be repeated.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1991Date of Patent: February 25, 1992Assignee: Longford Equipment International LimitedInventor: John D.
