  • Patent number: 5992767
Abstract: An injector is disclosed which comprises a valve needle engageable with a seating. A spring urges the needle towards its seating, the spring engaging a spring abutment. A pressure backing member positioned within the injector is slidable relative to the spring abutment under the action of the pressure of fuel applied thereto. The pressure backing member is engageable with a surface associate with the needle to urge the needle towards its seating. The slidable pressure backing member reduces the pressure in the pumping chamber both prior to and after termination of the injection process. Also, the backing member maintains the pressure in a fuel supply passage of a low level to enhance the efficiency of the injector.

  • Patent number: 5991027
Abstract: A measuring apparatus comprises a sensor having a vibrating beam whose resonant frequency represents a parameter, such as pressure, to be measured. A light guide supplies light from a source to the beam and returns light reflected from the beam and from the end of the guide to an interferometer. The difference in light paths is greater than the coherent length of the light. The interferometer has first and second paths which differ in length by the difference in the light paths plus an odd number of quarter wavelengths of the light.

  • Patent number: 5986871
Abstract: A method of operating a fuel injector comprises the steps of applying a test waveform to a solenoid coil of the injector to cause a response by an armature assembly and measuring the response of the armature assembly while the test waveform is applied to the solenoid coil. A control waveform for the injector is developed as a function of the variation of the measured response of the armature from a selected operational characteristic. The developed control waveform is thereafter applied to the solenoid coil to cause the armature assembly to approach a nominal position.

  • Patent number: 5984208
Abstract: A fuel injector includes a barrel having an insert recess therein within which an insert is disposed. A facing surface of the insert is located opposite a base surface of the recess and forms a passage interconnecting a high pressure fuel passage and a valve bore. High pressure intersecting bores are thus avoided, leading to a reduction in structural failures.

  • Patent number: 5979999
Abstract: An electrohydraulic braking system for motor vehicles with a brake master cylinder which can be actuated by a brake pedal. A wheel brake is coupled with at least with one vehicle wheel. The wheel brake can be connected with the brake master cylinder in order to subject the wheel brake to pressurized hydraulic fluid. A hydraulic pump, and a hydraulic pressure accumulator supplied by the pump, form an alternative source of pressurized hydraulic fluid which can be supplied to the wheel brake through a control valve arrangement in a controlled manner in order to subject the wheel brake to pressurized hydraulic fluid. A shut-off valve is arranged between the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic pressure accumulator in order to selectively make or shut-off a connection between the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic pressure accumulator to permit the hydraulic pump, in certain situations, to rapidly pressurize the braking system without having to simultaneously recharge the hydraulic pressure accumulator.

  • Patent number: 5977744
Abstract: The vehicle battery controller includes a controller for interconnecting an auxiliary battery to a main battery for engine starting or charging. If the auxiliary battery voltage is lower than a first threshold before engine starting its subsequent use is inhibited. If the main battery voltage exceeds the auxiliary battery voltage by more than a predetermined margin, the auxiliary battery is not used for engine starting. When the engine is running and the charging system is operating, the auxiliary battery is disconnected when the common voltage is below a second threshold.
