  • Patent number: 7215963
Abstract: A wireless communications network, a method of operating a wireless communications network, and a wireless network controller are described. The wireless communication network comprises a call processing system, a translator system, a first base station system, and a second base station system. The first base station system transfers first call traffic in a first format to the call processing system. The second base station system transfers second call traffic in a second format to the translator system. The translator system converts the second call traffic from the second format to the first format and transfers the second call traffic in the first format to the call processing system. The call processing system processes the first call traffic and the second call traffic.

  • Patent number: 7002957
Abstract: A method is described for transporting information in frames comprising header and payload information from a first network to a second network via a third network. The first and second networks are commonly managed but are independent of management of the third network. Network nodes generate respective headers for each outgoing frame from the node but completely copies payload from an incoming frame to the outgoing frames. Upon crossing a first boundary between the first and third networks, only a first part of the header is copied into the payload such that a reduced size header in the third network fits into space that would otherwise be occupied by a second part of the header that is not copied into the payload. Upon crossing a second boundary between the third and second networks, the headers are retrieved from the payload and used to generate header information in the second network.

Abstract: Web-based user interface for performing network provisioning. The Web-based user interface includes pages for display on a display device. Each page may include a first area containing a graphical workflow indicator that provides an ordered list of user-selectable tasks associated with performing provisioning in a network. Each page may also include a second area containing display information and/or parameter fields associated with a particular one of the user-selectable tasks. Accordingly, when a particular one of the user-selectable tasks is selected from the first area, the display information and/or parameter fields necessary to complete operations associated with the particular one of the user-selectable tasks are presented in the second area.

  • Patent number: 6829483
Abstract: In a third generation telecommunications network, quality of service can be provided to a mobile in a foreign network by providing a quality of service session divided into a first section from the correspondent node (24) to the home network (50) and a second section from the home network (50) to the mobile node (28); a quality of service enquiry message is sent through both sections, but a quality of service response message is not returned in the first section until the response message from the second section has been received by the home network (50).

  • Patent number: 6696285
Abstract: The rate of nucleic acid strand exchange can be greatly enhanced if one of the strands of a double-stranded nucleic acid oligomer has a single-stranded extension, or “toehold,” to which a complementary, single-stranded, nucleic acid oligomer can bind. Toehold-facilitated strand exchange makes possible the controlled addition and removal of one nucleic acid strand from a second, complementary strand. Oligomers are designed and used to carry out controlled, repetitive nucleic acid structural transitions mediated by hybridization and toehold-facilitated strand exchange reactions, which in turn control the operation of a nanomachine or a 2-state molecular switch.

  • Patent number: 6636657
Abstract: A channelized Wavelength Division Multiplex (WDM) equalizer enables the gain of each WDM channel to be individually controlled, enabling power adjustments of each channel over the equalizer's entire dynamic range. The gain equalizer includes a demultiplexer with each of its outputs interfaced to a different microelectromechanical system (MEMS) reflective device which adjusts optical power in response to a received control signal. The equalizer can be implemented to operate in a reflective mode or in a transmission mode.

  • Patent number: 6386714
Abstract: A reflecting apparatus includes a flexible mirror and at least one rocker arm coupling an applied force to a plurality of spaced-apart locations on the mirror to adjust the shape of the mirror. The reflecting apparatus may be used in an interferometer in the path of one of the interfering beams, and adjustments of the shape of the mirror may be used to control the interference pattern generated. The interference pattern created by the apparatus may be used to create fiber Bragg gratings and phase masks, including chirped gratings and masks. An interferometer may use such a reflecting apparatus in the path of each interfering beam.

  • Patent number: 6199137
Abstract: An IO controller device and method for controlling data flow, the method including determining a desired configuration for the IO controller, reprogramming the IO controller to allow for processing of one or more descriptor lists, modifying the configuration of the IO controller to reflect the addition or deletion of one or more virtual controllers, re-enumerating the IO controller, and processing a descriptor list for each of the IO controller and the one or more virtual controllers. The integrated circuit device for use as an IO controller includes a system bus interface, a programmable list processor and a port router. The integrated circuit device is adapted for reconfiguration to add or delete one or more virtual controllers. The virtual controllers provide substantially the full bandwidth supported by the integrated circuit device.

  • Patent number: 6031887
Abstract: An integrated circuit includes an n-bit counter having a plurality of k subcounters where both n and k are integers. At least one of the subcounters includes a switchable device adapted to receive a carry-out signal from an adjacent subcounter as a first input, a test carry signal as a second input, and a control input, the switchable device being capable of providing one of its inputs as an output, the control input capable of controlling selection of the output which is a carry signal. The subcounter also includes an n/k-bit counter, the n/k-bit counter receiving the carry signal and providing n/k output bits, and logic for combining the n/k-bits output from the n/k bit counter with the carry-out signal from an adjacent subcounter to provide an output that is a carry-out signal from the subcounter. The logic introducing a single gate delay between the carry-out signal from the adjacent subcounter and the carry-out signal from the subcounter.

  • Patent number: 6015998
Abstract: In an optical material formed of strips of laminated methods, through channels or "trenches" are produced in at least one of the lamination materials in a manner that the material will then consist of "stiff islands" interspersed with flexible regions created by the properly created through channels. The trenching alows a strip to become piece-wise alignable, and also makes it flexible enough to bond it in alignment in a laminate, yet continuous enough to be handled as one sheet for initial placement. "Chain-like" capability can be provided by making the sheet into a form resembling a jig-saw puzzle where the chances of the individual pieces slipping apart is reduced using narrow, slanted trenches. Alternatively, "springy" flexibility can be provided by forming relatively long, thin, bent strips of material that support the islands of continuous sheet. The islands are thus allowed to move two dimensionally relative to each other.

  • Patent number: 5729545
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for establishing a video dialtone connection between a customer's terminal, such as a set top terminal, and a server system, such as a video server. The connection is established via an access switch that is not part of a backbone broadband network. The backbone network is connected to the video server system and the access switch. A level one gateway controller controls establishment of the connection by establishing a connection between the server system and the access switch using the backbone network. A separate connection is then established between the path to the access switch and a circuit through the access switch to the customer terminal. Advantageously, the access switch need not be a part of the backbone network, an arrangement that is desirable for serving consumer type customers. The connection to the access switch is treated by the backbone network essentially as if it were a connection to a terminal or any of a group of terminals.
