Patent number: 6389138Abstract: A complex spreading and/or scrambling code sequence generation system uses a first complex code sequence having at least two components and a second complex code sequence having at least two components. The components of the first complex code sequence are respectively mixed with the corresponding components of the second complex code sequence to generate the complex scrambling code sequence. In doing so, an offset between the components of the complex scrambling code sequence is achieved for the same and/or different users. The complex scrambling code sequence can be used for spreading, scrambling, de-spreading or descrambling an information signal.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1998Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Quinn Li, Nallepilli S. Patent number: 6389462Abstract: In order to transparently redirect an HTTP connection request that is directed to an origin server (107) to a proxy cache (110-1), a proxy redirector (104) translates the destination address of packets directed to the origin server to the address of the proxy. During a handshaking procedure, a TCP connection is transparently established between the client (110-1) and the proxy cache. When the client transmits a GET request to what it thinks is the origin server, which request specifies the complete address of an object at that origin server that it wants a copy of, the proxy redirector modifies the complete address specified in that GET request before it is sent to the proxy cache. Specifically, the IP address of the origin server found in the destination field in the IP header of the one or more packets from the client containing the GET request is added by the proxy redirector as a prefix to the complete URL in the GET request to form an absolute URL.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1998Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Ariel Cohen, Sampath Rangarajan, Navjot Singh

Patent number: 6388998Abstract: A system and a method for code division multiple access (CDMA) communication. The system includes fixed terminals communicating with a central base station. The terminals in protection sectors of each sector are configured to employ codes from different sets of codes to overcome potential mutual interference between sectors on account of antenna radiation pattern roll-off. The remaining codes, preferably the majority of the available codes, are used in any one of a plurality of basic sectors, each of which separates the protection sectors of a respective sector. For an even number of sectors in a cell, the available codes are partitioned into three groups, two for the protection sectors and one for the basic sectors. For an odd number of sectors in a cell, the available codes are partitioned into four groups, three for the protection sectors and one for the basic sectors. Protection sectors are relatively narrow but broad enough to counteract the potential mutual interference between sectors.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1999Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Sanjay Kasturia

Patent number: 6388559Abstract: A remote control system uses a state signal that indicates whether a door or lock is opening, open, closing or closed. The state signal that indicates whether a door or lock is opening, open, closing or closed is transmitted. The remote control device receives the state signal, while the remote control device is proximate to the door or lock. The received state signal is stored in the remote control device. An alarm signal is generated, if the state signal is not received by the remote control device, and the stored state signal indicates that the door or lock is opening or open. The system may be used to monitor and control an automatic garage door opener, a power door locking system in an automobile, a trunk locking system in an automobile, or door or window locking systems in a building.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1998Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Alan Ian Cohen

Patent number: 6389084Abstract: A method and apparatus for equalizing a signal to accurately deconvolute the channel includes deriving a functional relationship between Doppler frequency and variance between the instantaneous energy of the received signal and the mean energy of the received signal. Theoretical values of Doppler frequency for a range of values of variance are mapped based on the derived functional relationship. The variance of a received signal is determined and the corresponding Doppler frequency estimate selected from the map. Optimal equalization learning parameters are then selected based on the corresponding Doppler frequency estimate so that the received signal may be deconvoluted independent of the impact of Doppler frequency.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1998Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Markus Rupp

Patent number: 6389003Abstract: A solution to a problem of false positives in frame synchronization in telecommunication systems involves generating a separate channel estimate based only on the non-SW (all −1) bits of a pilot sequence. This non-SW channel estimate is used to correct received pilot SW symbols. These specially corrected symbols are rake combined separately from other symbols. The result is used exclusively for the frame synchronization detector. Normal channel estimate calculations and rake combining proceeds as usual. This method of frame synchronization only refers to SW bit matches. False positives are decreased using the invention.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1999Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Christopher Burke Barroso

Patent number: 6389040Abstract: A frequency offset estimation is generated without explicitly generating a channel estimation for a frequency selective fading communication channel. This is realized by recognizing that, in the absence of additive noise, the channel output at a time n depends only on the last previous predetermined number, L, of data symbols, and that a “state” is a sequence of the last L symbols. Specifically, in a receiver, a received signal is mixed with a locally generated frequency corresponding to a frequency offset to generate a mixed signal. A calculation is made on the mixed signal in which channel outputs of the same state are combined and accumulated. Then, a summation is made over all possible states of the combined and accumulated channel outputs to yield a so-called metric calculation value for that mixed signal. The metric calculation is then repeated for a plurality of different locally generated frequencies corresponding on a one-to-one basis with a plurality of frequency offsets.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1998Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Harish Viswanathan

Patent number: 6389131Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing calls initiated by an initial call attempt request to permit the characteristics of call connections established in response to the ICA request to be controlled by translation information of a defining port. The defining port can be a real port of a switch, or a pseudo port having associated therewith a block of translation information, but no physical network equipment. Among the characteristics that can be controlled are a billing number of the call, and a routing plan for determining a route based on destination information specified in the ICA request, and the line or trunk features offered in the switch. Advantageously, the characteristics of the ICA request connection can be specified by translation information instead of being inflexibly tied to the pre-defined standard characteristics.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 1998Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Marino K. Patent number: 6385357Abstract: In an optical fiber transmission system, higher order PMD compensation is realized at the output of the transmission fiber. A compensator is placed at the output of the transmission fiber whose PMD vector is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the PMD vector at the output of the transmission fiber. The compensator PMD vector sweeps at a rate that matches the frequency sweep rate of the PMD vector at the fiber output. To compensate for second order PMD while avoiding the introduction of higher order PMD effects, a planar sweep is advantageously employed. A polarization pair controller is employed in advance of the compensator to align the PMD vector at the compensator input with the PMD vector at the fiber output so that the two cancel as well as to align the rotational axis of the compensator PMD vector with the rotational axis of the fiber PMD vector. The system may also include a monitoring device to monitor the compensation of fiber PMD, to determine the need for adjustments to the system.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2000Date of Patent: May 7, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Patent number: 6385356Abstract: In an optical fiber transmission system, higher order PMD compensation is realized with a sweeper device at the input to the fiber which converts the polarization of the light beam into a frequency dependent polarization whose rate of change is similar to the rate of change of one of the PSPs of the fiber. The frequency dependent polarization of the light beam is then aligned with one of the frequency-dependent PSPs at the input of the fiber. Furthermore, differential group delay dispersion for a given frequency can be reduced by employing a chromatic dispersion compensator prior to the receiver end of the fiber transmission system. Control of the polarization of the light beam can be facilitated by monitoring PMD in the system, or alternatively, monitoring an effect of PMD in the system, such as bit error rates.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1999Date of Patent: May 7, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Patent number: 6385609Abstract: A system and methods are provided for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data supplied on the report data stream of an electronic switching system or other generator of a report or log data stream or file. Local data storage facilities are provided to receive and store report data stream information for one or more switches. A centralized data storage and analysis facility receives the data collected by the local facilities. A parser parses the collected report data to select and reformat report items of interest according to predefined selection triggers. A post processing facility includes pattern identification and pattern classification components. The pattern identification component reads the parsed, selected report items and extracts a pattern comprising the selection triggers and function call addresses associated with each event. The pattern classification component determines whether the identified pattern for each event is old or newly encountered.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 1999Date of Patent: May 7, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Alvin Barshefsky, Shao-Kuang Hu, Scott Douglas Olmstead, Kirk K. Patent number: 6385172Abstract: Methods and communication networks having a plurality of connection-oriented switches in which administrative weights are assigned based on link call blocking probabilities. Three assignment schemes include, first, a solution that can be built in the switch software of sufficiently similar switches to enable the switches to determine administrative weights for their links. The second and third schemes employ administrative weight management stations. The second scheme uses an administrative weight management station that operates to enhance total network revenue or throughput in a communication network in which all of the switches implement a certain type of accounting management information databases (MIB). The third scheme uses an administrative weight management station that computes administrative weights for switches that do not have the capability for the second scheme, but which employ appropriate MIBs.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1999Date of Patent: May 7, 2002Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Deepak Kataria, Dimitris Logothetis, Santhanam Srinivasan, Malathi Veeraraghavan
