Patent number: 6650451Abstract: The scanning free space optical broadband access network uses LASERs to carry high-speed data streams between a central location and a number of subscribers served from that location. High-speed digital data modulates the LASERs in both directions, allowing a virtual MAN to be created. A few dozen subscribers share a single virtual pipe with several hundred Mbps band-width available. Beam scanning techniques at a central hub permit a single LASER and optical assembly to serve many customers.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1999Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Charles Calvin Byers, Stephen Joseph Hinterlong, Robert Allen Novotny, Robert E. Patent number: 6650840Abstract: A method for identifying faults in a branched optical network having a central office optically connected to a plurality of optical network units by a plurality of optical paths. The method involves transmitting an optical signal from the central office to the optical network units reflecting a portion of the transmitted optical signal back to the central office. This reflected signal is then used to determine whether a fault exists in the branched optical network.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1999Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Robert D. Patent number: 6649073Abstract: Problems caused by a nonuniform processing profile are avoided by altering the area to be processed so as to compensate for the processing profile. More specifically, with regard to etching, problems caused by a nonuniform etch profile can be avoided by altering the mask employed in specifying the etch area so as to compensate for the etch profile. Nonuniform parameters of interest of structures which result from a nonuniform etch profile during the etching of a mask in which all the structures were identical can be avoided for by altering the mask employed in specifying the etch area so as to compensate for the etch profile. The mask is changed in a manner that is inversely proportional to the etch profile for each particular structure characteristic that determines the parameter of interest for which uniformity is desired.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2001Date of Patent: November 18, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Cristian A Bolle

Patent number: 6646890Abstract: Mezzanine boards can be added to and removed from a supporting base board mounted in a slot of a shelf adjacent other base boards while the base boards remain in electrical service. Guide rails allow a mezzanine board to be slid into position from the front edge of the base board. The guide rails themselves can be moved to provide a new spacing to accommodate a different width mezzanine board without having to take the supporting base board out of service. Openings in the sides of the guide rails promote the flow of air between the mezzanine board and the base board to provide cooling.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 2002Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Charles Calvin Byers, Todd Keaffaber, Andrew F. Patent number: 6647259Abstract: The present invention provides a method for limiting the number of simultaneous call forwarding attempts for a mobile unit. A call is made for a mobile unit. The call request is sent to the MSC associated with the mobile unit. When the mobile unit is not currently active at the MSC, the MSC sends a location request to an SCP. The SCP responds with a return message that includes a temporary location directory number (TLDN) and an indicator. The MSC checks the current number of simultaneous call forwarding attempts being made for the mobile unit. If the current number of simultaneous call forwarding attempts exceeds a threshold, the MSC does not forward the call. If the number of simultaneous attempts does not exceed a threshold, the MSC forwards the call to the mobile unit by sending it to the TLDN.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2000Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Patrick Joseph Boyle, Mark Alan McCormick

Patent number: 6647262Abstract: The system includes a network having a base controller (30) and a mobile station (32). The base controller (30) has a packet measurement order unit (34) which causes a package measurement reporter (68) in the mobile station to provide a measurement report. This report is stored in a buffer (44) and compared with reference values on a reference unit (48). If a change of cell is warranted, a packet cell change order unit (50) issues a command which is recorded by packet cell change unit (58) of the mobile station to retune the transmitter and receiver (54 and 56) to a new cell. The mobile station also has a unit (64) which generates a package cell change request to the base controller (30) to initiate a package cell change order from the unit (50) when a change is warranted.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2000Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Cristian Demetrescu, Constantin Ilas, Konstantinos Samaras, Louis Gwyn Samuel, Fiona Clare Angharad Somerville, Jian Jun Wu, Ran-Hong Yan

Patent number: 6647365Abstract: Noise-like signal components are detected within arbitrary regions of the time-frequency plane. Various transforms are applied to G time domain samples with different spectral/temporal resolutions. The flatness of the time domain samples and the frequency samples for each transform are compared. If the computed flatness measures are about the same, the samples are assumed to be noisy. Noise-like signal components can be detected using a general filterbank within a limited time interval and frequency range by decomposing the signal into N subbands. To each group of G subband samples in time {tk}, a linear orthogonal transform is applied to obtain the frequency domain samples {fi}. The flatness of the time domain samples is compared to the flatness of the frequency domain samples {fi}. A filterbank with uniform frequency-tiling can be used to detect noise-like signal components.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2000Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Christof Faller

Patent number: 6646989Abstract: This invention relates to a method to effect hop-by-hop routing in a network segment where different nodes have different views of the network topology. In particular, the methods of this invention are applicable when each node in a network or network segment may be aware of only a subset of the communication links in the network, without perceiving other communication links. Based on each node's individual view of the network, the method introduces the concept of a visibility set that includes all visible communication links. More specifically, an efficient algorithm is disclosed for searching for a family of one-to-all optimal feasible paths in communication network where different nodes may have different views of the network topology.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1999Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Dennis Andreyevich Khotimsky, Vincent Georges Pierre Fayet, Antoni Bronislaw Przygienda
