Patent number: 6122275Abstract: Real-time hardware primitives are added to packet switches to provide efficient support for inward multicasting. The lookup table used for routing is extended by adding additional opcode and operand fields into the routing table and by including ALU circuitry to process these fields and corresponding fields in the arriving cells. Memory word widths can be extended with minimal additional chip count and the ALU can be a small addition in a header processing VLSI, thereby giving only a modest increase in complexity. By including real-time processing in the switch it is possible to solve the ACK implosion problem associated with high-speed reliable multicasting transport protocols. By keeping the primitives as general as possible, other applications can benefit as well from these real-time primitives.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1996Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventors: Mark John Karol, Sanjoy Paul, Clark Woodworth

Patent number: 6121814Abstract: A bus master controller comprising a plurality of logic modules, each module coupled to a separate bus driver circuit. The logic module operates using a "break-before-make" protocol derived from a finite state machine, delay element and exclusive-OR gate. The finite state machine generates a predetermined sequence that requires an "assert" signal to always be delayed with respect to a "de-assert" signal, thus eliminating the possibility that more than one set of bus drivers will be coupled to the bus at any one time.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1998Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Matthew R. Patent number: 6122085Abstract: A predistortion technique for adding a controlled amount of distortion to a radio-frequency (rf) drive signal of a laser in a lightwave transmitter. The magnitude of the added distortion approximates the distortion inherently produced by the laser. Additionally, the phase of the added distortion is substantially 180 degrees different from the distortion produced by the laser. Hence, the added distortion effectively cancels the distortion produced by the laser. The lightwave transmitter comprises a signal conditioner, a predistorter, a high-power rf amplifier circuit and a laser. The signal conditioner processes rf signals received from an rf input circuit. The processed rf signals are passed to the predistorter, which splits the rf signals into two portions. One of the split portions, which includes a major amount of the rf signal, passes through a delay circuit to an input of the combiner. The other split portion passes to diode circuits that selectively generate second- and third-order distortion products.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1997Date of Patent: September 19, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Jesse Samuel Bitler

Patent number: 6119016Abstract: A technique for synchronizing the timing signals in the base stations of a wireless telecommunications system is disclosed. In accordance with the illustrative embodiment of the present invention, each base station derives the frequency of its timing signal from one periodic signal, but the phase of its timing signal from a second periodic signal. In general, the base station derives its timing signal based on: (1) the frequency of a reference timing signal, and (2) the phase of a feedback signal. The reference timing signal can be obtained from a common timing source or from different timing sources which are designed to have the same frequency. The feedback signal is advantageously the confluence of two feedback loops. In accordance with the first feedback loop, the feedback signal is based on the phase of the base station's own timing signal. In accordance with the second feedback loop, the feedback signal is based on the phase of the timing signals from one or more nearby base stations.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 1998Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Alex Matusevich

Patent number: 6118977Abstract: A wireless terminal and auxiliary system are disclosed that enable the wireless terminal to determine its location based on signals transmitted from navigation satellites. In particular, the tasks of signal acquisition and signal processing required of a wireless terminal in the prior art are divided between the wireless terminal and the auxiliary system in accordance with the illustrative embodiment. The auxiliary system assists the wireless terminal by acquiring information about the satellites' ephemerides, by partially processing it and by transmitting the partially processed information to the wireless terminal in a form that is useful to the wireless terminal. The wireless terminal then uses the partially processed information from the auxiliary system to assist the wireless terminal in acquiring the ranging signals from the navigation satellites quickly and when they are weak.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1997Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Giovanni Vannucci

Patent number: 6118835Abstract: An apparatus and method employs a First In, First Out (FIFO) buffer to separate a first logic block operating at a first rate, such as 33.75 MHz, from a second logic block operating at a second rate, such as 27 MHz, which is lower than the first rate. The dual port FIFO operates with asynchronous Read and Write ports, and the Write port controls the input of data from the first logic block at the first rate to the FIFO. The FIFO provides a value indicating that the FIFO is full. Enablement of the Read port is based upon the presence of data in the FIFO and a synchronization signal for the data. Once enabled, the data is transferred from the FIFO to the second logic block at the second rate. A flag value of the FIFO is set when the FIFO buffer is full, and is used by the first logic block to interrupt data transfer into the FIFO at the first rate to allow data provided at the FIFO output at the second rate to empty the FIFO buffer.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1997Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Edmond H. Barakat, Anthony Botzas

Patent number: 6119009Abstract: Techniques for predicting RF signal propagation in indoor environments are disclosed. A typical technique comprises six distinct phases. In one phase, the mean wall separation, d, of one floor of a building is estimated. In a second phase, a reflection coefficient, s, is estimated for the floor in general. In a third phase, a number of trial RF propagation measurements are made to gather empirical data about the RF propagation characteristics of the floor. In the fourth phase, the mean wall separation, d, the reflection coefficient, s, and the trial RF propagation measurements are fit, using well-known techniques, into a wireless propagation model, such as ##EQU1## where P(r) is the measured or predicted power at a distance, r, from the transmitter, ##EQU2## and .xi. is the parameter that is fit to the empirical data.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1997Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Lucent Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Harold Urey Baranger, Denis Jacques Ullmo
