  • Patent number: 6009079
Abstract: The polling features of a resident hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) network platform are used to poll between a link a hybrid digital terminal (HDT) and a network interface unit (NIU). In the absence of a polling response from the NIU to a polling query from the HDT, the polling is regarded as unsuccessful. Hence, every polling query with no response from the NIU means the polling is unsuccessful and counted as a failed polling. The unsuccessful polling will be the result of an outage causing fault such as a physical break anywhere between the NIU and the HDT. Using an exception report format, only the unsuccessful pollings are reported and the counted. To calculate the unavailability of the link during any period of time, the number of counts within the period is acquired and used in the measurement process. The result is a statistical measure of the link unavailability during a specified time period, which may be one day, one year, or any suitable unit of time.

  • Patent number: 6008091
Abstract: The specification describes intergate dielectrics between the floating silicon gate and the control silicon gate in MOS memory devices. The intergate dielectrics are composite structures of SiO.sub.2 --Ta.sub.2 O.sub.5 --SiO.sub.2 with the first SiO.sub.2 layer grown on the floating gate,, and all layers preferably produced in situ in an LPCVD reactor. After formation of the composite SiO.sub.2 --Ta.sub.2 O.sub.5 --SiO.sub.2 dielectric, it is annealed at low pressure to densify the SiO.sub.2 layers. Electrical measurements show that the charge trap density in the intergate dielectric is substantially lower than in layered dielectrics produced by prior techniques.

  • Patent number: 6009089
Abstract: A Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA) receiver is disclosed which removes the pilot signal from the received signal. The pilot signal is defined by its multipath parameters (amplitudes, phase shift and delays) and its signature sequence. Since this information is known at the user's receiver terminal (i.e., handset), the pilot signals of the interfering multipath components of the baseband received signal are detected and removed prior to demodulation of the desired multipath component. The pilot signal may be cancelled prior to or following the data accumulation stage.

  • Patent number: 6009128
Abstract: There is disclosed, a method and apparatus for processing a signal in a pipeline. The method includes retrieving a present state cost. Simultaneously with receiving the present state cost, an estimated symbol and a received symbol are obtained, a difference between the received and estimated symbols is found, the difference between the received and esitmated symbols is squared, and the present state cost is added to the squared difference to generate a next state cost. The apparatus includes hardware to carry out the method.

  • Patent number: 6009138
Abstract: A global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver is used in an electronic lap counter which maintains a lap count and which increments the lap count upon "observing" via the GPS receiver that the user, having gone away from an initial "start" location (e.g., an end of a pool or the start line of a closed loop running track), has returned to that location. A user-supplied indication, such as the pressing of a push button, serves as an indication to the lap counter that the lap counter's then current location is to be used as the start location.

  • Patent number: 6009097
Abstract: The system of the invention uses ATM switches as high performance Internet routers by using standard ATM signaling to set up cut-through paths. The cut-through paths are Switched Virtual Paths which are shared with similar flows toward the same destination and a similar Quality of Service (QOS). The concurrency of multiple flows is achieved by using a different Virtual Channel Identification (VCI) for each flow. The cut-through paths are reused to minimize the overhead associated with setting up and tearing down the paths. Depending on the needs of the traffic, different SVCs having different QOS and different bandwidths can be used. Customer service needs and traffic measurements data are used to identify potential cut-through paths. Once a cut-through path is set up, IP mechanisms are used to update the routing tables of related routers and ATM hosts.

  • Patent number: 6007605
Abstract: There is provided an integrated exclusion filter and pressurizing device which prevents leakage of unfiltered fluid across the interface area between a rotating filtering apparatus and non-rotating bulkhead. The exclusion filter utilized is of the type which utilizes Boundary Layer Momentum Transfer methodology to achieve filtration, and which includes a cylindrical stack of substantially flat annular plates. A pressurizing device is utilized downstream from the exclusion filter to repressurize filtered fluid and direct the filtered fluid toward the interface area. Either all the filtered fluid or only a portion may be repressurized, and some of the filtered fluid may be directed toward the bulkhead itself to aid pressurization by creating a local stagnation region. The pressurizing device may utilize flow diverting blades in a housing, including blowers, pumps, compressors, and fans.

  • Patent number: 6008123
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of forming a opening in a semiconductor dielectric layer. In an advantageous embodiment, the method comprises the steps of forming a hardmask layer on the dielectric layer wherein the hardmask layer has an etch rate less than an etch rate of the dielectric layer, forming a guide opening through the hardmask layer, forming a spacer within the guide opening that reduces a diameter of the guide opening and forming the opening in the dielectric layer through the guide opening. The method may further include the steps of depositing a conductive material in the opening and guide opening and over at least a portion of the hardmask layer that extends beyond the guide opening, and removing the hardmask layer and the conductive material layer that extend beyond the guide opening. In certain embodiments, the contact opening may be formed to a width equal to or less than 0.25 .mu.m.

  • Patent number: 6006187
Abstract: The present invention discloses a computer prosody user interface operable to visually tailor the prosody of a text to be uttered by a text-to-speech system. The prosody user interface, permits users to alter a synthesized voice along one or more dimensions on a word-by-word basis. In one embodiment of the present invention, the prosody user interface is operable to alter the speaking rate relative word duration and the word prominence of a synthesized voice. Specifically, one or more words are selected using presentation means, and speech parameters corresponding to the speaking rate relative word duration and the word prominence are manipulated using speech parameter manipulation means. Modifications to the speech parameters are accompanied by visual changes to the presentation means, thereby providing a visual feel to the computer prosody user interface.

  • Patent number: 6003222
Abstract: The specification describes techniques for fabricating tapered waveguides in planar photonic integrated circuits with the tapers formed in the z-direction (thickness). The tapers are formed by depositing the core layer in two operations. After depositing the first core layer, the layer is masked, and a step is formed in the first layer. When the second core layer is deposited over the step, a smooth taper results. The core layers are preferably formed by flame hydrolysis. During consolidation the two core layers coalesce into a single homogeneous layer with a smooth taper in the thickness dimension of the waveguide.

  • Patent number: 6006272
Abstract: A method for translating non internet unique addresses of a home network device to an internet unique address for internet communication through a router. Every device within a given home network is assigned three addresses:(i) a configured address identical to the network address of the router enabling access to an Internet; (ii) a logical address visible only to the other devices in the same home network; and (iii) a medium access control ("MAC") address. Every packet originating from a home network source device includes its MAC address, the router MAC address, its configured address and the network destination address, and is forwarded to its destination through the router. The router examines the network destination address to determine whether the communication is intranet or internet.

  • Patent number: RE36471
Abstract: An optical communication network includes at least one single-mode fiber, referred to as a "primary fiber," for transmission between a central office and a distribution node, and at least one multiplicity of single-mode fibers, referred to as "distribution fibers," for transmission between the distribution node and a multiplicity of optical network units (ONUs). Transmissions are exchanged between the primary and distribution fibers via at least one optical coupler located at the distribution node. The network is passive in the sense that all monitoring of the transmission media and the ONUs can be performed at the central office, without active intervention at remote locations. The network includes a monitor and a multiplicity of bypass lines by means of which at least a portion of inbound signals from the distribution fibers are transmitted to the monitor without passing through the optical coupler at the distribution node.
