  • Patent number: 7286763
Abstract: An optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) adapted to route optical signals having at least two different bit rates. The OADM has at least two sets of DWDM channels, e.g., with channels in a first set having a first bandwidth value suitable for the transmission of 10-Gb/s signals and channels in a second set having a second bandwidth value suitable for the transmission of 40-Gb/s signals. The first and second sets occupy two different spectral bands and the first set has two subsets of interleaved channels. In one embodiment, the OADM has first and second optical branches adapted to process optical signals corresponding to first and second groups of channels, respectively. The first group includes a first subset from the first set while the second group includes the second set and a second subset from the first set. Advantageously, OADMs of the invention may be used to create independent processing paths for different groups of channels. As a result, a communication system having those OADMs can be upgraded, e.g.

  • Patent number: 7283545
Abstract: A method for identifying ephemeral terminations in a packet-based network includes identifying the Radio Network Controller with an RNC indicator in a first level, identifying the one or more ICCs with an ICC indicator in a second level, identifying the one or more PMCs with a PMC indicator in a third level, and identifying the one or more local components with a local component indicator in a fourth level. The first level, second level, third level and fourth level form different portions of the termination identifier. The termination identifier is structured so that the one or more local components identified in the fourth level are associated with the one or more PMCs identified in the third level, and the one or more PMCs identified in the third level are associated with the one or more ICCs identified in the second level and the one or more ICCs identified in the second level are associated with the one or more RNCs identified in the first level.

  • Patent number: 7283502
Abstract: In a UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) based wireless system, a wireless network element (e.g., a base station) exchanges information with another wireless network element (e.g., a radio network controller) via data frames (uplink or downlink). Each data frame comprising a header portion and a payload portion, which comprises a QoS class indicator field. Illustratively, the eight bit spare extension field of a UTRAN data frame (uplink or downlink) is used to convey a four bit payload type indicator and a four bit QoS class indicator.

  • Patent number: 7283552
Abstract: A method for scheduling data bursts from origin to destination nodes of a communication system involves selecting a yet-unscheduled, feasible node pair for scheduling of a burst therebetween; selecting a timeslot from a finite timeslot sequence; scheduling the burst for the selected timeslot; and repeating the preceding steps to exhaustion of unscheduled demand or of feasible node pairs. The feasibility of a node pair is conditioned on the avoidance of collisions with already-scheduled bursts, taking the various origin-to-destination propagation delays into account.

  • Patent number: 7283814
Abstract: A method and apparatus for scheduling data transmissions is disclosed that reduces the delay variability in transmissions of data. A scheduling metric is calculated as a function of a TCP throughput rate for each mobile terminal in the system. The relative value of this metric for a user is used to schedule data transmissions from that user. As a result, TCP time-outs are reduced or avoided and the throughput and the predictability of system performance are increased.

  • Patent number: 7283753
Abstract: In a system and method of optical communication, optical signals are generated in multiple wavelength channels. Each optical signal is passively transported from an origination node of a network to a destination node. The destination node is determined by the signal wavelength. For at least some signals, the passive transport includes transport through a branch point of the network, such that the signal wavelength determines the output branch through which the signal is routed. In certain embodiments, signals are generated according to a schedule devised to substantially prevent the concurrent arrival, at the same destination node, of signals having the same wavelength but coming from different origination nodes.

  • Patent number: 7283811
Abstract: A system and a method for directed provisioning and management of user applications on limited resource devices by a content provider, through an integrated platform which handles all aspects of aggregation and management of such applications. By “content aggregation”, it is meant the procedure by which applications are introduced by a content provider, and are then aggregated into a service for provision by that content provider and/or service provider. Preferably, the collected applications may then be examined by the user according to a content directory, which is a hierarchical organization of different applications according to one or more categories and/or attributes. The service provider preferably controls access to the content or user applications by the user, for example according to a subscription of the user and/or capabilities of the limited resource device of the user.

  • Patent number: 7283744
Abstract: An optical performance monitor (OPM) adapted to (i) sample an autocorrelation function corresponding to an optical signal transmitted in an optical network and (ii) based on the sampling, characterize two or more impairments concurrently present in the optical signal. In one embodiment, the OPM has an optical autocorrelator (OAC) coupled to a signal processor (SP). The OAC receives the optical signal from the network, generates two or more samples of its autocorrelation function, and applies said samples to the SP. The SP processes the samples and generates two or more signal metrics. Based on the signal metrics and reference data corresponding to the impairments, the SP then obtains a measure of each of the impairments.

  • Patent number: 7283550
Abstract: A method of applying one of several resource distribution algorithms to an incoming call to a communication system. The applied resource distribution algorithm is based on resource parameters obtained from a main scheduler of the communication system. Some of the resource parameters include the type of call, the resource usage and the resource allocation scheme. The resource parameters generally describe the amount of resources that are currently being used by the system and which resources are available to the incoming call. The method of the present invention admits the incoming call to the communication system in accordance with one of the resource distribution allocation schemes. In this manner, the resources of the communication system can be efficiently and fairly distributed to different types of users requesting admission to the communication system.

  • Patent number: 7283745
Abstract: Techniques and systems for design of optical switch arrays so as to minimize power requirements are described. A design system includes a computer system hosting a design program. The design program receives parameters for the switch array, including a number N of outputs required, and either a maximum number L of stages allowed or maximum and average power requirements allowed. If power requirements are used as parameters, the design program uses N and the power requirements to compute the value of L. The design program then constructs a minimum power sequence of L switches or N switches, whichever is less. If N is less than L+1, N outputs are present and the array is complete. If N is greater than L+1, the design program then adds switches one at a time to the minimum power switch path of the array, until the array provides N outputs.
