  • Patent number: 5802162
Abstract: A method for changing the call handling capacity of a telecommunications switch requires authorization from an external source, such as a telecommunications equipment manufacturing company (TEMC). Each switch purchased from the particular switch manufacturer includes a customized upgrade security protocol which limits access to data bus blocks associated with integrated digital carrier units of the switch. To alter the upgrade security program, an authorization code must be retrieved from the TEMC. The authorization code is then entered into the switch, and used to automatically alter the upgrade security protocol so that previously blocked data buses may be activated.

  • Patent number: 5800860
Abstract: A novel planar waveguide structure has been constructed by sintering substantially pure SiO.sub.2 layers in a He.sub.2 /BCl.sub.3 atmosphere. This results in the generation of a liquid phase of substantially lower viscosity than that of the deposited silica by itself. Since viscous sintering is enhanced by the presence of this liquid, consolidation occurs at lower temperature, e.g. 1000.degree.-1100.degree. C., than those used in the prior art, e.g. 1350.degree.-1500.degree. C. Much of the B.sub.2 O.sub.3 remains unreacted with the silica particles it helps to sinter, acting like a flux to bring about consolidation. This remaining B.sub.2 O.sub.3 is removed at the conclusion of the consolidation procedure by steam treatment at temperatures of 900.degree.-1100.degree. C. Some boron is incorporated into the silica layer, changing its CTE without substantially increasing its index.

  • Patent number: 5801875
Abstract: Garnet material according to a particular embodiment of the invention exhibits a substantially rectangular magnetization loop, with .vertline.H.sub.S .vertline.>.vertline.4.pi.M.sub.S .vertline.Oe and .vertline.4.pi.M.sub.s .vertline.<100 G over a predetermined operating range (e.g., -40.degree. to +80.degree. C.), where H.sub.S is the switching magnetic field of the loop, and 4.pi.M.sub.S is the saturation magnetization. The material exhibits improved latching behavior. In a further embodiment of the invention the composition of the garnet material is selected such that the material exhibits hard latching behavior (.vertline.H.sub.s .vertline.>500 Oe) at least at room temperature. Garnet materials according to the invention can advantageously be used in magneto-optic isolators and other magneto-optic devices. For instance, the material enables manufacture of isolators that do not contain a bias magnet.

  • Patent number: 5802045
Abstract: A method for providing narrowband-related service features to subscribing broadband lines comprises establishing a composite voice path interconnecting a narrowband server and the subscribing broadband line via a broadband switching fabric. Particularly, a call set-up signal is received in a broadband call processor, converted to narrowband signaling format and extended to a designated narrowband server. Responsive to receipt of the call set-up signal, the designated narrowband server establishes a narrowband voice path interconnecting a narrowband network element to a synchronous-asynchronous converter. Subsequently, the broadband call processor establishes a broadband segment interconnecting the subscribing broadband line with the synchronous-asynchronous converter. The broadband segment corresponds to the narrowband voice path to form a composite voice path. The composite voice path is used by the designated narrowband server to provide narrowband-related service features to the subscribing broadband line.

  • Patent number: 5801783
Abstract: Within a communication system, driving a numerically controlled oscillator with a frequency of a precision frequency oscillator and adjusting the frequency of the numerically controlled oscillator by a calculated number to be equal to that of a frequency signal derived from an external source. The calculated number utilized to adjust the numerically controlled oscillator is then transmitted to each of a number of subunits. Each subunit has another numerically controlled oscillator that is driven by a frequency derived from an internal communication link connecting the subunit to the communication system; and the other numerically controlled oscillator is controlled by the calculated number so that its frequency matches the frequency of the precision oscillator. The frequency of the internal communication link is controlled by the precision oscillator.

  • Patent number: 5802058
Abstract: In a telecommunications system (8) that comprises communications endpoints (14-15), communications resources (18-20), a communications server (10) that includes a media manager (21), and a network (12) that interconnects them all, a first endpoint (14) provides the media manager with an offer of a connection to a second endpoint (15) that specifies attributes desired for the connection by the first endpoint. The media manager registers the request and forwards it to the second endpoint. When the second endpoint responds with an acceptance of the connection that specifies attributes desired for the connection by the second endpoint, the media manager compares the registered offer with the received acceptance to determine any resources that are needed to bridge any differences between their attributes and to effect the connection.

  • Patent number: 5802236
Abstract: Disclosed are non-periodic microstructured optical fibers that guide radiation by index guiding. By appropriate choice of core region and cladding region, the effective refractive index difference .DELTA. between core region and cladding can be made large, typically greater than 5% or even 10 or 20%. Such high .DELTA. results in small mode field diameter of the fundamental guided mode (typically<2.5 .mu.m), and consequently in high radiation intensity in the core region. Exemplarily, a fiber according to the invention has a solid silica core region that is surrounded by an inner cladding region and an outer cladding region. The cladding regions have capillary voids extending in the axial fiber direction, with the voids in the outer cladding region having a larger diameter than those in the inner cladding region, such that the effective refractive index of the outer cladding region is greater than that of the inner cladding region. Non-periodic microstructured fiber potentially has many uses, e.g.

  • Patent number: 5802268
Abstract: There is disclosed an integrated circuit including a digital processor having EEPROM and a control register. The digital processor is capable of receiving data to be programmed into the EEPROM and is capable of programming the data into the EEPROM. The digital processor includes a control register for receiving bits to control a write line and an erase line. The digital processor also includes a processor core coupled to the control register by a data bus, the digital processor is coupled to the EEPROM by a ROM address bus and a RAM data bus. The EEPROM memory location identified by the ROM address bus is programmed to retain data latched onto the RAM data bus. This is achieved by the digital processor writing control bits to the control register to enable the write line for a write operation of sufficient duration to assure that the data on the RAM data bus is retained in the EEPROM memory address that is enabled.

  • Patent number: 5802143
Abstract: A method for identifying damaged cable pairs in a pulp cable comprises arbitrarily attaching proximal ends of damaged cable pairs to ports on a first connector block of a service restoration system (SRS), and arbitrarily attaching distal ends of damaged cable pairs to ports on a second connector block of the SRS. Directory number information associated with each damaged cable pair is retrieved by the SRS from affected subscribers, and the serving switch. If a match of directory number information is found, the proximal damaged cable pair end is interconnected to the distal damaged cable pair end of a single cable pair via SRS switch fabric. The SRS periodically generates a status report including port locations of corresponding ends of a damaged cable pair so that the ends may be permanently spliced together.

  • Patent number: 5802275
Abstract: A personal digital assistant (PDA) receives and executes both encrypted and unencrypted programs. Encrypted programs are fairly secure from virus infection, while unencrypted programs are not. To prevent contamination of the PDA with infected encrypted programs, only those encrypted programs that are keyed to the individual PDA's unique device identifier can be decrypted and executed by that PDA. To prevent non-secure programs from corrupting secure programs and their data, programs that were received unencrypted are prevented from modifying programs that were received encrypted as well as data generated by their execution. When a user suspects a virus infection, the user pushes a special button on the PDA that prevents execution of programs that were received unencrypted and hence are suspected of being infected, while allowing continued execution of programs that were received encrypted and hence are presumed to be secure.
