Abstract: A method for generating a simplified model of a complex binary transistor circuit. A set of Boolean functions are derived for the circuit and these functions are tested to determine if the circuit is stable and binary. All intermediate transient circuit configurations are eliminated so that only direct transitions between stable circuit configurations remain. If the circuit is also combinational, a logic circuit is generated. If the circuit is not combinational but if there is a clock input to the circuit that controls the values of the node (the circuit exhibits synchronous behavior) and all nodes in the circuit are well-defined (either combinational or level-sensitive), a logic circuit is generated. The logic circuit is processed to generate a further simplified logic circuit by merging different types of latches and other logic elements and removing duplicative logic elements.

Abstract: The reliability of supplying data stored in a plurality of different memories to different users is enhanced by (a) dividing each of the memories into primary and secondary sections, (b) partitioning the data into successive blocks and (c) storing the blocks of data in sequence in respective ones of the primary sections. Then storing in sequence the blocks of data that have been stored in the primary section of one of the memories in respective ones of the secondary sections of the other ones of said disks.
Abstract: A circuit for maintaining the magnitude of a radio frequency (RF) signal at least one predetermined level employs a detection circuit coupled to an RF signal generator by a four port coupling device. In one embodiment of the present invention, an impedance inverter in series with a diode is connected between the load termination of the coupling device and ground. The series combination of the impedance inverter and diode approximates a short circuit as the output signal power approaches a predetermined low amplitude threshold and approximates an open circuit as the output signal power approaches a predetermined upper amplitude threshold so that gain is provided to signals received by the detection circuit below a first amplitude level and attenuation is provided to signals received by the detection circuit above a second amplitude level.
Abstract: This invention involves a fiber probe device and a method of making it. The probe includes a relatively thick upper cylindrical portion, typically in the form of a solid right circular cylinder, terminating in a tapered portion that terminates in a relatively thin lower cylindrical portion, typically also in the form of a solid right circular cylinder, the lower portion having a width (diameter) in the approximate range of as little as approximately 0.05 .mu.m.

Abstract: An apparatus that provides for the dialing of telephone numbers utilizing a limited number of keys such as only two keys. The apparatus provides for the creation of an internal telephone directory that includes telephone numbers and names that is also generated by only two keys. In addition, telephone numbers can be rapidly accessed from the telephone directory by the utilization of the two keys. Once these telephone numbers and names are accessed from the telephone directory, the two keys can be utilized to place a call to the accessed telephone number or to delete the entry from the telephone directory.
Abstract: An individual's speech sample, obtained for the purpose of speaker verification, is used to create a "protected" model of the speech. The protected model, which is stored in a database in association with a personal identifier for that individual, is arranged so that the characteristics of the individual's speech cannot be ascertained from the protected model, without access to an encryption key or other secured information stored in the system.
Abstract: Disclosed is a circuit included in a channel unit for testing that channel unit in a telecommunications system. A digital signal processor detects and reproduces signals from a local digital switch and controls a number of relays which result in various terminations appearing on the channel unit. The processor then monitors the signal levels as well as the signaling bits from the channel unit to test for proper performance.
Abstract: The self-phase modulation (SPM) effect in a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) segment of an optical fiber transmission system is used to reduce the required length of the DCF segment needed to compensate the chromatic dispersion of a single mode fiber (SMF) segment of the system. It was determined that the length of the DCF segment at which the widest opening of the electrical eye diagram margin occurs, for a given optical input power to the DCF segment, decreases with increasing optical input power to the DCF segment. Increasing the optical input power to and reducing the length of the DCF segment thus both improves bit error rate of the system and reduces the cost for compensating for dispersion.
Abstract: A dynamically regularized fast recursive least squares (DR-FRLS) adaptive filter and method are disclosed which provide O(N) computational complexity and which have dynamically adjusted regularization in real-time without requiring restarting the adaptive filtering. The adaptive filter includes a memory for storing at least one program, including a dynamically regularized fast recursive least squares (DR-FRLS) program; and a processor which responds to the DR-FRLS program for adaptively filtering an input signal and for generating an output signal associated with the input signal.
Abstract: A radio receiver front end is disclosed that processes a multi-carrier signal with a large dynamic range. An illustrative embodiment of the present invention incorporates both feedforward and feedback mechanisms to suppress the amplitude of spurious carrier signals so as to prevent those signals from flooding the dynamic range of the mixer that mixes down the multi-carrier signal.
Abstract: A telephone instrument with computing means and a memory that stores a number of dialed numbers. The computing means follows a process that is responsive to the "re-dial" button of the telephone instrument and to the "#" and "*" buttons on the dial pad. The process provides a "backup" capability that points to successively older entries in the memory, thereby allowing a user to dial out older entries, and also provides a search function that searches through the memory for a specified number.
Abstract: A bandwidth allocation system allows packets or cells within traffic flows from different sources contending for access to a shared processing fabric to get access to that fabric in an order that is determined primarily on individual guaranteed bandwidth requirements associated with each traffic flow, and secondarily on overall system criteria, such as a time of arrival, or due date of packets or cells within traffic flows.
Abstract: A novel technique for fine polishing surfaces of diamond to the submicron level involves applying to the diamond surface an oxygen-emitting polishing medium, either a dry powder or a powder dispersed in a liquid carrier. The diamond surface is then polished by high speed rubbing to a submicron finish by inducing oxygen emission and oxygen-carbon interaction. Several embodiments of apparatus for polishing are described.

Abstract: A hot clock adiabatic gate, using CMOS technology, incorporates an ancillary transistor. The gate is energized by multiple clock signals of different phases to reduce power consumption. The output logic voltage of the gate can reach full-rail voltage by allowing the CMOS technology to discharge via the ancillary transistor. The hot clock adiabatic gate and associated ancillary transistor may be incorporated into various logic circuits, such as an inverter, a memory cell, a NAND gate, and a NOR gate. In one configuration, a CMOS inverter is controlled by four clock signals having four discrete phases. The CMOS inverter optimally includes a CMOS gate transistor pair wherein the semiconductor channels of two ancillary transistors are in series with the semiconductor channels of the CMOS gate transistor pair.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for training a text classifier is disclosed. A supervised learning system and an annotation system are operated cooperatively to produce a classification vector which can be used to classify documents with respect to a defined class. The annotation system automatically annotates documents with a degree of relevance annotation to produce machine annotated data. The degree of relevance annotation represents the degree to which the document belongs to the defined class. This machine annotated data is used as input to the supervised learning system. In addition to the machine annotated data, the supervised learning system can also receive manually annotated data and/or a user request. The machine annotated data, along with the manually annotated data and/or the user request, are used by the supervised learning system to produce a classification vector. In one embodiment, the supervised learning system comprises a relevance feedback mechanism.
Abstract: Establishing a multimedia telecommunication conference call with reduced bandwidth if not all participants are available to be part of the conference call by telecommunication terminals. When one telecommunication terminal is initiating a conference call, the initiating telecommunication terminal first establishes low speed data links with each of the other telecommunications terminals that are to be part of the conference. When all users of the other telecommunication terminals are ready for the conference, the other telecommunication terminals signal the initiating telecommunication terminal which then adds the necessary bandwidth to the conference call to establish the multimedia telecommunication conference call. Since the conference call is already set up, the initiating telecommunication terminal only has to add the necessary bandwidth to conference call. Each participant in the telecommunication conference call designates when they are ready to have the conference call start.
