  • Publication number: 20140196907
Abstract: A hydraulic oil well pumping arrangement employs a compensating type hydraulic pump, a directional valving arrangement and a proportioning valving arrangement. When the directional valve is energized, oil is directed to the rod end of the hydraulic cylinder. In one embodiment, a time delay halts the movement of the sucker rod or pumping string to allow accumulation of oil in a slow following well. In another embodiment, the pumping string rapidly falls to the bottom of the stroke in order to shake or jar debris from the string.

  • Publication number: 20140188292
Abstract: Described are methods, systems, and computer readable media for adjusting the speed control of a pump assembly. The method can include the steps of setting the speed of a first stroke of the pump assembly to a first value and setting the speed of a second stroke of the pump assembly to a second value, modifying the speed of the first stroke while the pump is engaged in an upstroke, and modifying the speed of the second stroke while the pump is engaged in a downstroke through manual or automatic configuration processes. The computer readable medium can include an application that can be adapted to execute instructions that can configure the upstrokes and downstroke of the pump. Through these automatic or manual configuration parameters, a linear pump can execute fully configurable multiple speed settings within a stroke on the pump assembly, thus increasing the pump's efficiency irrespective of pump fillage.

  • Publication number: 20130306326
Abstract: Adaptable systems for a surface pumping unit that includes a low inertia pumping unit mechanism having a pneumatic counterbalance assembly are described, as well as methods for the use of such systems for subterranean fluid recovery. The system is capable of being integrated with well management automation systems, thereby allowing for response to active control commands, and automatically altering and/or maintaining a counterbalance force in the pumping unit by adding or removing air mass from a containment vessel associated with the pumping unit.

  • Patent number: 8433516
Abstract: An instrumentation system for assessing operation of a reciprocating pump system which produces hydrocarbons from a non-vertical or a vertical wellbore. The instrumentation system periodically produces a downhole pump card as a function of a directly or indirectly measured surface card and a friction law function from a wave equation which describes the linear vibrations in a long slender rod. A control signal or command signal is generated based on characteristics of the downhole pump card for controlling the pumping system. It also generates a pump and well analysis report that is useful for a pump operation and determination of its condition.

  • Publication number: 20130058798
Abstract: A pumping arrangement employs a compensating type hydraulic pump, a directional valving arrangement and a proportioning valving arrangement. When the directional valve is energized, oil is directed to the rod end of the hydraulic cylinder. The rod or piston part of the hydraulic cylinder will then elevate until a first limit switch is actuated which then will de-energize the directional valve and send a current signal to the proportional valve. This current signal to the proportional valve forces it to open to a point at which the cylinder rod would extend at the desired velocity until it reaches a second limit switch. The current signal to the proportional valve is then decreased, creating a choking arrangement that forces the cylinder rod to decelerate. Upon reaching the third limit switch, the signal is removed from the proportional valve so that it closes.

  • Patent number: 8240221
Abstract: A method and pumping unit for use with an inclined wellhead. Proper address of the wellhead is accomplished through incorporation of an elbow-shaped walking beam. The forward section of the walking beam is fabricated such that its longitudinal axis is angled to address the inclination of the wellhead. The rearward section of the walking beam and the four-bar linkage system remains unchanged relative to a prior art pump jack intended for vertical wells. This modification is a simple and effective means of addressing an angled wellhead while preserving the well-known operating characteristics of a prior art pumping unit. Torque factors, polished rod position, speed, acceleration, stroke length, and effective counterbalance remain unchanged.

When the directional valve is energized, oil is directed to the rod end of the hydraulic cylinder. This current signal to the proportional valve forces it to open to a point at which the cylinder rod would extend at the desired velocity until it reaches a second limit switch. The second limit switch is near the bottom (for example, 1 foot, or 0.30 meters) of travel of the rod or piston. The current signal to the proportional valve is then decreased, creating a choking arrangement that forces the cylinder rod to decelerate. The cylinder rod then reaches another limit switch.

  • Patent number: 7870900
Abstract: A system and method for controlling the speed of a progressing cavity liquid well pump to increase liquid production from a well while avoiding operation of the well in a pumped-off state. A controller controls a variable speed drive to drive a progressing cavity liquid well pump at a set pump speed while measuring well and system parameters indicative of pumping performance and/or liquid production from the well. The set speed of the pump is changed in steps either increasingly or decreasingly by the controller, acting through the variable speed drive, in response to the measured well and system parameters. The controller, responsive to the measured well and system parameters, challenges the set pump speed by varying the set pump speed so as to increase the production from the well while avoiding pump and well operation in a pumped-off state.

  • Patent number: 7547196
Abstract: Rod Float Mitigation (RFM) methods for rod-pumped oil wells having a variable frequency drive which controls the speed of the motor for the pump. Each method monitors rod loads or a similar condition and takes action only when rod load drops below a predefined minimum load. A first method reduces the speed of the motor to a preset level. A second method fixes the torque level on the pump downstroke by adjusting motor speed based on a calculated gearbox torque compared to a programmed fixed limit. Another method includes a program in the variable frequency drive which includes a preferred RFM Torque Curve for the pump to follow on its downstroke. When rod float occurs, the program monitors gearbox torque and adjusts the speed to follow the predetermined RFM Torque Curve thereby mitigating rod float with minimum decrease in production.

  • Patent number: 7212923
Abstract: A method for inferring production of a rod pumped well. Inferred production is estimated in a well manager which not only performs pump-off control with a down-hole pump card, but also estimates liquid (oil-water) and gas production using the subsurface pump as a meter. Methods are incorporated in the well manager for identifying and quantifying several conditions: pump leakage, unanchored tubing, free gas and oil shrinkage. Quantifying such conditions in the well manger enables accurate inferring of production thereby eliminating the need for traditional well tests.

  • Patent number: 6988420
Abstract: An apparatus for testing power transmission components of a locked gear train having two helical gears coupled on a first shaft meshed with two helical pinions coupled on a second shaft, with the two gears arranged to axially translate (while rotating) with respect to the two pinions when a linear force is applied to a thrust bearing at an end of the first shaft. The axial displacement of the two gears causes torsional displacements of the meshed gear and shaft elements, creating a dynamic torque within the locked train assembly. Under rotation, this dynamic torque subjects the components within the locked gear train to a much higher power level for testing.

  • Patent number: 6015271
Abstract: An improved beam pumping unit for pumping fluids from a well having a foldable support structure to allow storage of the pumping unit in a low profile position. The beam pumping unit utilizes a walking beam pivoted on a central bearing, a drive means connected to one end of the walking beam to oscillate the walking beam and a horsehead at the other end of the walking beam for connection to the polished rod of the downhole pump. A foldable Samson post supports the central bearing of the walking beam. The foldable Samson post allows lowering of the pumping unit from a first, fixed standing position in which the walking beam is raised for normal pumping operation and a second, fixed lowered position for storage.
