  • Patent number: 5951152
Abstract: An apparatus and method of manufacture for a light source housing apparatus. The housing is insert molded around a plurality of electrically separated leads and defines a cavity. A portion of each lead is exposed along a bottom surface of the housing. Two or more leads have terminal portions near a rear surface of the housing. A lead, which can be used to protect against electrostatic discharge, is also mounted along a front face of the housing and terminates at a ring portion which defines an opening that is aligned with the cavity. The opening of the ring portion is preferably sized and shaped to correspond to an outer peripheral surface of a lens, lightpipe or other optical media, so that the lens can be inserted through the ring portion and into the cavity. A light source, such as an LED, is mounted within a cutout of the housing. The housing is manufactured using lead sets each having pre-formed leads indexed by a leadframe through an injection mold to form the housing around each lead set.

  • Patent number: 5580341
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for performing a shoulder press exercise are disclosed. A user support and a primary hinge are mounted to a frame. A secondary hinge is mounted to the primary hinge. An arm mounted to the secondary hinge has a handle adapted to be grasped by the user. The two hinges permit the user to displace the handle in either or both the longitudinal and lateral directions. A means for resisting the displacement of the handle, preferably in both the lateral and longitudinal directions, is provided. The resistance means may include an incremental weight stack operably engaged to handle by belts directed by self-aligning pulleys. A second handle, arm and secondary hinge may be provided for the other hand so that the user may exercise both halves of his body. The arms may be connected such that both handles move the same longitudinal and/or lateral distance.

  • Patent number: 5518477
Abstract: A cable and pulley system for a multi-station exercise machine involving a tensioned cable led over a series of pulleys, at least one of which is a cradled pulley normally nested in a cradle and radially held in the cradle by the force of the tension on the tensioned cable and radially movable out of the cradle by a greater force applied to the cradled pulley by a second pull cable mechanically connected to the cradled pulley and functioning to move the cradled pulley radially out of its cradle when sufficient tensional force is applied to the second cable to overcome the tension applied to the cradled pulley by the tensioned cable. Additional exercise stations can be added to operate with additional cables and cradled pulleys without changing the manner of operation of other cables and exercise stations.

  • Patent number: 5476430
Abstract: Exercise treadmill with motor driven tread belt and means for varying the tread belt speed by a speed control system which makes available to the treadmill user a plurality of nominal speeds and also a plurality of rates of restoration of the tread belt speed upon the occurrence of a change in load on the moving tread belt resulting from the user's foot plant impact on the tread belt. By selection by the user of one of the plurality of available rates of restoration of tread belt speed, the user through the user operated speed control can select a desired "stiffness" or "softness", otherwise known as "feel", to reduce user foot plant induced stress or trauma. The preferred speed control system involves a variable speed DC motor with a microprocessor controlled SCR phase control power module, the microprocessor including program memory with plural sets of program values, each with respective delta gain, loop gain and maximum power values.

  • Patent number: 5348367
Abstract: A simple and economical six-bar linkage system keeps a reclining chair stable in its closed position, and permits it to assume any degree of recline between slight recline and full recline without need for friction devices or springs. This is accomplished by the stable balance of the linkage. Sequencing devices are likewise not needed; interaction of the components constrain the movement of the linkage, such that there is only one possible path of travel. The six links are: base frame, back frame, seat frame, drive link, carrier link, and legrest. A heart-rest position may be attained with assistance from an attendant.

  • Patent number: 5310393
Abstract: An improved T-bar row exercise device (10) includes a pivot bar (20) with an intermediate transverse weight tube (40) located behind the handle (32) and footrests (28) in order to minimize inertial effects for smoother motion, better form and more effective training by the user. If desired, the weight tube (40) can be mounted in a raised position to provide more proportional resistance over the lift angle.

  • Patent number: 5259080
Abstract: A damped gas displacement support system which includes an envelope of flexible, gas impervious material and a core of partially compressed, flexible cellular material occupying the space within the envelope, the cellular material compression being sufficient to establish a partial vacuum therein. When force is applied to the cell the partially compressed and partially evacuated core instantly seeks equilibrium about that area of the envelope receiving the applied force. Various system embodiments are described and illustrated, along with a preferred method for manufacturing the support cell.

  • Patent number: 5231718
Abstract: The invention provides a support system having an envelope of flexible material within which a flexible cellular support cell is positioned upon an innerspring support cell. The flexible cellular support cell may comprise a damped gas displacement support cell or a damped fluid displacement support cell, which may be surrounded by a relatively thick resilient material. The innerspring support cell may comprise a gatched pediatric innerspring. Various system embodiments are described and illustrated.

  • Patent number: 5201333
Abstract: A folding walker with side frames rotationally mounted on both ends of a front frame such that the side frames can rotate independently from a closed position where they are parallel to the front frame to an open position where the side frames are perpendicular to the front frame and parallel to each other. The side frames are locked in the open position by fixed plates that are mounted on the front frame. Detents with lever releases are mounted on the side frames. The detents releasably engage the fixed plates when the side frames are in the open position.

  • Patent number: 5102121
Abstract: A range-limiter device for a weight machine. An input assembly which rotates in response to a force exerted by the user is fixed to a shaft supported on the frame of the machine. A cam is also fixed to the shaft. Two parallel arms are supported on the shaft. Mounted on substantially the entire perimeter of the cam is a cam track. A cam follower surrounds the cam track. One end of a cable is secured to the cam follower. The cable wraps around the perimeter of the cam in the cam track grooves and leaves the cam track tangentially and travels to a pulley system terminating at a weight stack of the machine. Two features of the cam follower are captured in slots on the interior surfaces of the parallel arms. To adjust the start position for the range of motion of the input assembly, the user disengages a pull pin from the hole in the cam thereby disconnecting the parallel arms from the cam. This results in disconnecting the cable from the cam.
