Patent number: 12582997Abstract: Various devices are described for separating magnetic beads from a suspension in a tube. The devices allow a magnet to be placed near, or removed from, a cap associated with the tube. Magnetic beads can be attached to the cap by holding the tube such that the suspension flows onto an inner surface of the cap. The cap may be removed and replaced on a tube or moved to a different tube. Removing the device, or a magnet of the device, allows the magnetic beads to be released into a liquid in a tube. In a kit, a plurality of tubes may be pre-filled with reagents for an assay. In a process, the device can be used to move magnetic beads from one tube to another. Other devices and process are described for separating magnetic beads from liquid in a syringe or flowing into or out of a syringe.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2022Date of Patent: March 24, 2026Assignee: LUMINULTRA TECHNOLOGIES LTD.Inventors: Neil Christopher Sharma, Noah Chamberlain Todd, Michael James Witman

Patent number: 12066422Abstract: A system and process may be used to test water samples to measure ATP and/or estimate a microbial population, for example using an adenosine triphosphate (ATP) based assay. The system includes a device that is use in combination with single-use or disposable cartridges. The cartridge receives the water sample and is pre-loaded with one or more reagents. The device receives the cartridge and contains physical, electronic and/or mechatronic devices that interact with cartridge. One or more actions such as metering, mixing and conveying are performed automatically by elements of the device and/or cartridge. A sensor in the device measures light produced in the cartridge from a reaction with ATP in the water sample. Optionally, the cartridge also contains a pre-loaded amount of ATP, which is used to provide an internal reference or calibration measurement.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 2019Date of Patent: August 20, 2024Assignee: LUMINULTRA TECHNOLOGIES LTD.Inventors: Patrick Andrew Whalen, Derek Christopher Dunn, William Dicke, Xavier Boulerice, David McMullin, Michael Brown

Patent number: 12018247Abstract: A method of binding a nucleic acid and/or a contaminant from a sample includes the step of contacting the nucleic acid and/or the contaminant with a metal-based gel. The metal-based gel is preferably an aluminum-based gel, a cesium-based gel, a lanthanum-based gel, or a combination thereof. The phosphate concentration, phosphate:metal ratio, and/or pH in the sample is modulated during binding to influence the binding capacity and/or preference of the gel.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2020Date of Patent: June 25, 2024Assignee: LuminUltra Technologies Ltd.Inventors: Neil Sharma, Wei Huang

Patent number: 11365140Abstract: A decision support system and method can be used to control a water treatment or distribution system. The decision support system collects data from multiple water system operators and analyses the data for a selected water system according to one or more rules or algorithms. The system returns data, optionally including alerts or predictions, to the system operator. Optionally, the decision support system uses machine learning applied to (i) historical data from a selected water system and/or (ii) data from other water systems to modify the rules or algorithms used to analyze current data from a selected water system. In some embodiments, the data collected includes microbial population data such as ATP data, optionally including derivatives of microbial population data; microbial speciation information; or, metagenomic data.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 2018Date of Patent: June 21, 2022Assignee: LUMINULTRA TECHNOLOGIES LTD.Inventors: Patrick Andrew Whalen, Jordan Jeremy Schmidt

Patent number: 7556933Abstract: A reagent system comprises a first reagent which includes a high pH phosphate buffer, and a second reagent which includes luciferase, luciferin, a magnesium salt and an enzyme stabilizer. The second reagent has a low pH and a buffer with a pK which is near the optimum pH for activity of luciferase. The reagent system may be used in a process for measuring total adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and/or dissolved extracellular ATP, in a fluid containing microorganisms. The reagent system may also be used in a microbiological remediation or production process.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 2004Date of Patent: July 7, 2009Assignee: Luminultra Technologies Ltd.Inventors: James C Cairns, Phillip J Whalen, Patrick A Whalen
