  • Patent number: 4715204
Abstract: An operating head (24) carrying a hammering element (28) is introduced into the interior of the workpiece at a position where the workpiece, as measured by a measuring instrument (49,50) shows maximum deviation from the axis of rotation of the rotation symmetrical body. The hammering element is controlled to hammer against the inside at a rate which depends on the distance of deflection and/or the position thereof, during rotation, or longitudinal movement of the workpiece with respect to the operating head, for example by controlling a potentiometer (19) by an eccentric control disk (16) which has its maximum eccentric deflection of position in line with the maximum eccentricity, or deflection of the workpiece (7) from the axis of rotation. The apparatus can also be used to remove dents and the like, by hammering against the dent and longitudinally shifting the workpiece with respect to the hammering element.

  • Patent number: 4711173
Abstract: The amount of travel and the phase of axial reciprocation for sets of distributing rollers provided on each of at least two inking units of a rotary printing unit are independently adjustable from a central location. For each of the inking units, one eccentric drive adjustable in reciprocating phase and in the stroke or amount of travel is connected to the end portion of an impression cylinder twice the size of associated plate cylinders so that the axial reciprocating movements of the distributing rollers are derived in synchronism with the rotation of the impression cylinder and in a ratio of 1:2 to the rotation of the associated plate cylinders. In one embodiment, a single bolt clamps the two eccentric drives one on top of the other to the end portion of the impression cylinder. In another embodiment, the two eccentrics drives are concentrically arranged in ring-fashion to permit separate clamping and unclamping of each of the four independent adjustments of the amount of travel and phase of reciprocation.

  • Patent number: 4711175
Abstract: An inking unit disposed in the ink duct of a printing press includes dispensing elements for regulating the quantity of ink dispensed on the duct roller of the press and includes a plurality of blades disposed on linear adjusters for movement in the plane passing through the longitudinal axis B of the quantity-regulating dispensing elements and the line of contact between the dispensing edge thereof and the duct roller. Each blade is secured to a retaining pin on the adjuster by way of a securing aperture disposed perpendicularly to its bearing surface, and only minimal clearance, which can be very reduced in the direction of movement, is left between the pin and the securing aperture, so that when the ink gap closes, the blade of a dispensing element can automatically be aligned parallel by the dispensing edge bearing on the surface of the duct roller.

  • Patent number: 4709872
Abstract: To provide for controlled braking effort on a selected paper roll (5) from which a web (14) is applied to a utilization machine, and additionally for fast-stop or holding conditions, the roll is coupled to an operating disk brake (10) which receives braking pressure from a regulated pressure source. Additionally, rapid-stop brake calipers forming a rapid-stop brake (11) are applied to the disk, preferably having a higher braking friction coefficient, and controlled from the regulated pressure via a fluid disjunctive or OR-gate valve (42). A magnetic valve (36), controlled by a computer-controller (28), selectively switches the controlled fluid pressure through the OR-gate valve (42) only to the operating brake or to the fast-stop brake and, via a branch connection (46a), also to the operating brake.

  • Patent number: 4696229
Abstract: A rotary offset printing press which can be operated either for prime and verso printing or for printing on one side only, with flying plate change in the latter case, is organized so that the common counterpressure roller used with either of the two pairs of printing rollers (plate roller and rubber cloth roller) is used only as a paper feed-out guide during prime and verso printing. The counterpressure cylinder can be shifted to let it assume its normal function in single-side printing. A small shift of the drive gearing makes it possible to use the counterpressure cylinder for one or the other pair of printing rollers selectively while a plate change is performed for the idle pair.

  • Patent number: 4692739
Abstract: A light-emitting diode is used both for receiving data from an operator to change the logic state of a device and for displaying the entered data back to the operator. Current is selectively applied to the diode to display the data, but on an alternate basis the photo-current produced in the light-emitting diode by surrounding illumination is sensed and the data are received by detecting the fall-off in the photo-current caused by the operator covering the light-emitting diode. This technique is advantageously employed for the input and display of ink slide settings for a rotary printing machine by using a light-emitting diode matrix or bar graph display subject to finger-tip control by the operator. The diode matrix is scanned by repetitively and sequentially inhibiting the lighting current to the individual light-emitting diodes so that they may be sequentially connected to a photo-current monitoring circuit via a multiplexer under control of a clock circuit.

  • Patent number: 4690054
Abstract: A sheet feed drum for transferring sheets in a rotary printing press wherein the drum other contour is provided with an ink-repellent coating and two circumferentially spaced front and rear drum edges defining a duct therebetween which accommodates a sheet gripper system. The ink-repellent coating supporting a netting-like fabric relatively loosely thereon prevents any smearing of a freshly printed underside of a sheet during sheet feed on the drum while the sheet is engaged by the gripper system. Starting at the front edge of the drum, the outer contour of the drum is constructed in the form of a continuously increasing signal merging into a fixed drum radius whereby the netting-like fabric is contactable by the freshly printed underside of the sheet on the sprial first substantially flatly behind the front edge of the drum and then in any subsequent angle of rotation of the drum without the sheet tangent ever being bent or creased.

  • Patent number: 4681035
Abstract: To compensate for oscillations and bending of a blanket cylinder, and particularly oscillatory behavior under specific operating speeds, underlays between the rubber blanket and the cylinder surface are provided which are of differential thickness, so that, at any given operating speed where the blanket cylinder tends to move away from an associated impression cylinder, the underlay is thickened to thereby maintain essentially uniform printing pressure against the printing substrate (5) under all conditions. The system is equally applicable for plate cylinder - blanket cylinder systems of uniform diameter, as well as for plate cylinder - blanket cylinders of different diameter, and, in the latter case, preferably utilize an underlay blanket which tapers uniformly from a thinner portion to a thicker portion beneath the printed subject matter transferred to the blanket cylinder upon the second revolution of the plate cylinder.
