Abstract: Methods and apparatus are described for a data link control layer of a communication modem in which data movement functionality is implemented in hardware. In one embodiment, a data link layer comprises software, memory and hardware. The software comprises a processor configured to receive control signaling from a host device and provide control information to the hardware. The hardware comprises an outbound memory manager configured to receive data from the host device, determine locations in the memory for the data, store the data in the memory, determine which of the data is to be forwarded to a physical layer during a given transmit period, and forward the data to the physical layer. In preferred embodiments, the modem is a high performance modem designed for the terminals of a wireless local area network having multiple data flows, segmentation and reassembly, encryption, automatic repeat request, and quality of service requirements.

  • Patent number: 6882191
Abstract: A frequency multiplier circuit is provided that does not rely on filtering to remove unwanted harmonics and spurious content. In one implementation, a frequency doubler comprises a first rectifier doubler stage adapted to receive a first input signal having a first frequency and output a first rectified signal having multiple harmonics; a second rectifier doubler stage adapted to receive a second input signal having the first frequency and offset in phase from the first input signal and to output a second rectified signal, which has the multiple harmonics and is offset in phase from the first rectified signal; and a differential amplifier stage adapted to sum the first and second rectified signals to produce an output signal including a desired output harmonic having a frequency that is double the first frequency. The summing results in the substantial cancellation of unwanted output harmonics in the output signal.

  • Patent number: 6879840
Abstract: A rate and power control algorithm for a communication system, the algorithm including the steps of: assigning a target channel condition metric to be met at a first terminal for signaling received from each of one or more remote terminals of the system, each terminal supporting a plurality of rates and a plurality of transmit power levels, each target channel condition metric based upon the type of service supported by each remote terminal; receiving a signal at the first terminal from each remote terminal; and adjusting a respective target channel condition metric assigned for a respective remote terminal in response to signal information generated from the received signal. In variations, the algorithm is performed in a distributed manner by different cells of a communication system and at least two of the remote terminals support traffic of different types of service.

  • Patent number: 6836180
Abstract: An R-C polyphase network that provides bandpass shaping and amplification to maintain the quadrature phase output is provided. In one implementation, a polyphase device comprises two transistors each having a collector, a base and an emitter. Positive and negative components of an input signal are coupled to a respective base of the transistors, the transistors adapted to drive the R-C polyphase network. Inputs of the R-C polyphase network are coupled to the collectors of the transistors. The R-C polyphase network includes an inductor and has first output and a second output offset in phase. The inductor is adapted to provide bandpass filtering of the first output and the second output to reduce harmonics and spurious content in the output, as well as provide amplification of the outputs relative to the input signal.
