  • Patent number: 5351722
Abstract: A tetraxial fabric and a weaving machine for manufacturing the fabric. The tetraxial fabric is formed by the crisscross of warp yarns, weft yarns, and bias yarns having two different diagonal directions. A first set of warp yarns is overlaid by the weft yarns and, in turn, overlies the bias yarns. A second set of warp yarns, which alternate with the warp yarns in the first set, overlies the weft yarns and is, in turn, overlaid by the bias yarns. Due to the yarn formation, the fabric has a constant isotropy and evenness and can be made with a fill coefficient of up to 100%. The weaving machine for the manufacture of the tetraxial fabric can alternately produce, in the fabric formation area, two sheds between the warp yarns for passing the weft yarns at opposite sides with respect to the bias yarns.

  • Patent number: 5350127
Abstract: A process and device for monitoring the bobbin thread on stitch-forming machines, on the bobbin of which a residual amount of thread is wound in a winding direction opposite the direction of winding of the principal amount of thread, is to ensure that a first control function will be generated at the beginning of consumption of the residual amount of thread, and a second control function is generated nearly without delay in the case of thread end or thread break. To achieve this, two signal patterns are received with a phase shift from a bobbin acting as a signal generator, and the first signal function is generated in the case of a deviation of the actual phase shift from the desired phase shift. If only one signal pattern is received, this first control function is also generated if its signal sequence deviates from a reference signal sequence. The second control function is generated if a stoppage of the bobbin lasts longer than a predeterminable number of stitches.

  • Patent number: 5351149
Abstract: An amplitude-shift-keyed (ASK) optical transmitter is described for generating an ASK modulated infrared signal from a light-emitting-diode (LED). The transmitter includes a DC powered microcircuit for generating an ASK modulation signal. A pair of mosfet devices are connected in series with one or more LED's between the mosfets. An oscillator signal used to operate the microcircuit is also employed as a carrier signal to activate one mosfet while the ASK modulating signal is coupled to operate the other mosfet. Input capacitances of the mosfets are used to tune the oscillator signal and smooth the leading and trailing edges of the ASK modulation signal. Several embodiments are described.

  • Patent number: 5351043
Abstract: A method of transmitting data on a communications network having two oppositely directed unidirectional buses (A,B) and a number of access units (4) coupled between buses, the method including the step of establishing a queue which is distributed in the access units and which controls when the access units can transmit data packets on the buses. When an access unit has a data packet (38) queued for transmission on bus A, it sends a REQ bit on bus B. The access units monitor the number of REQ bits passing and empty packets available so as to thereby establish the distributed queue. The access units are able to handle both data packets (38) which are suitable for information from computers and synchronous packets 36 which can be used for voice circuits.

  • Patent number: 5350740
Abstract: This invention relates to drilling fluid additives that suppress clay swelling within a subterranean well and to methods for controlling clay swelling during the drilling of a subterranean well. A trihydroxy alkyl amine is reacted with an alkyl halide or a water soluble quaternary amine to form a quaternized trihydroxy alkyl amine. The reaction products can also include condensed reaction products of quaternized trihydroxy alkyl amines. The quaternized reaction products are characterized by low toxicity and compatibility with anionic drilling fluid components. The products are added to water base drilling fluids which are circulated throughout a well. The drilling fluid additives and the method of controlling clay swelling provide for improved control of the rheological properties of drilling fluids along with increased environmental and drilling fluid compatibility.

  • Patent number: 5350131
Abstract: In a fishing reel of the type in which the spool for receiving the fishing ine is caused to move to and fro in the direction of its winding axis in response to a cam drive for driving a spindle attached to the spool, the cam drive including a guide part with a guide slot into which projects an eccentrically mounted cam stud, the guide slot is in the form of an elongated S in order to impart an acceleration to the spool at its reversing points, and thereby prevent formation of bulges at the sides of the spool during winding. The locations in the guide slot corresponding to reversing points of the spool are offset from a center line of the guide slots along a longitudinal axis of the slot in a direction perpendicular to the stroke direction, resulting in the above-described acceleration and also having the effect of increasing displacement of the cam drive mechanism in the stroke direction.

  • Patent number: 5351317
Abstract: An interferometric tunable optical filter selects a predetermined wavelength or wavelengths from a wavelength division multiplexed signal. The optical filter splits an input signal into a plurality of waveguide branches. In each branch, the amplitude and phase of the signal can be individually controlled. The signals are then recombined. The resulting interference gives a wavelength dependent transmission spectrum that can be adjusted as desired.

  • Patent number: 5351307
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the acquisition and processing of screen images or radiographs and to an apparatus making it possible to inspect or control mechanical parts. The process consists of obtaining at least two screen images of the part to be inspected, converting said images into digital video images coded on several grey levels, correcting each image with respect to itself and then with respect to a reference image and finally binarizing the corrected images in order to superimpose them, so as to determine the image points which correspond and thus detect defects. Application to the control and inspection of mechanical parts.

  • Patent number: 5351281
Abstract: A double open-ended sample holder for sample material for X-ray spectroscopic analysis including a cylindrical body containing the sample material and having top and bottom open faces. An analytic film is mounted tautly across the lower face, and a microporous film positioned across the upper face cell passes gases generated by X-rays striking the sample material but does not pass harmful particle materials contained in the cell. Upper and lower rings mounted to the cylindrical body secure the lower and upper films to the body. A handling support connected to the top securing ring provides a grip for a tool used in the process of remotely raising or lowering the sample holder relative to placement into or removal from an X-ray cassette. The handling support is spaced from the microporous film so that gases generated in the cell are allowed to escape across the microporous film at a maximum rate of evacuation.
