Abstract: A damper seal (310) and method of sealing and damping a rotating shaft (312) are disclosed. The damper seal (310) includes a stator housing (314), a plurality of cavities (C.sub.1, C.sub.2, C.sub.3, C.sub.4), a first sealing blade (316) for modulating the fluid flow into the cavities, and a second sealing blade (318) with notches (330) and/or holes (340) for modulating the fluid flow exiting the cavities (C.sub.1, C.sub.2, C.sub.3, C.sub.4) less than the fluid flow entering the cavities (C.sub.1, C.sub.2, C.sub.3, C.sub.4) to provide improved damping and sealing.
Abstract: A system in which mass quantities of liquids may be stored in a substantially frozen state, portions thawed for dispensing, and any undispensed thawed portions rechilled for further storage is disclosed. The system includes a tank with a substantially bell-shaped, or flared, interior, the flaring of the tank surface combining with force of gravity to detach frozen material for dispensing. Separate temperature control sections allow selected areas of the tank to be heated or cooled as necessary, moreover, and distinct reservoirs of heat-transfer liquid (such as glycol) may be used for heating versus cooling the tank.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an improved continuous phase for a drilling fluid and specifically a silicone continuous phase which is non-polluting and substantially non-toxic. Preferred silicones for use in the invention are dimethylsiloxane polymers. In the drilling fluid compositions, suitable emulsifiers, wetting agents, viscosifiers, weight materials and fluid loss additives may be added in conjunction with water and/or a brine phase for desired rheological properties.
Abstract: Encapsulated yeast composition especially developed for use with frozen doughs comprising food grade fibers having adsorbed thereon liquid cream yeast, the particles being coated with a continuous layer of impervious thermoplastic material, frozen dough containing the encapsulated yeast composition and the method for making the encapsulated yeast.
Abstract: A method, and associated apparatus, for providing a wireless communication station with a dynamically-assigned address which provides a temporary address to route data to the wireless communication station. A temporary address is assigned to the wireless communication station to permit data, such as packet data, to be communicated between the wireless communication station and a correspondent host. Once communication with the wireless communication station is terminated, the temporary address can be reassigned and reused pursuant to subsequent communications with another wireless communication station.
Abstract: Alkanes are converted to unsaturated carboxylic acids by contacting an alkane with an oxidizing agent and a heteropolyacid or polyoxoanion comprising (1) at least 9 atoms of a first framework metal or metals comprising molybdenum, tungsten or vanadium or combinations thereof and (2) 1 to 3 atoms of a second framework metal or metals comprising zinc or a transition metal different from the first framework metal.

Abstract: A laser wavelength control system (20) stabilizes laser output wavelength. The control system includes a reflector/filter device (40) upon which laser radiation is incident for yielding both a filtered-transmitted signal (FS) and a reflected signal (RS). A controller (45) uses both the filtered-transmitted signal (FS) and the reflected signal (RS) to generate a control signal (CS). The control signal is utilized by a temperature converter (100) to adjust laser output wavelength of the laser (22). In one embodiment, the reflector/filter device is an optical fiber grating. The wavelength control system facilitates construction of a modular optical multichannel transmission system (200).
Abstract: In a fuel tank with a filler neck of plastic material which filler neck is connected at one end to the fuel tank and has a filler opening at its other end, a vent pipe extending from the tank to the filler opening, an adsorber chamber with a chamber opening and a fuel vapor conduit providing for communication of the tank with the adsorber chamber are all integrally formed with the filler neck in a single blow molding step, the adsorber chamber, after being filled with a bag of activated carbon, being closed by a lid which carries a regeneration valve and covers the chamber opening.

Abstract: This invention relates to a double open-ended sample holder cell for x-ray spectroscopic analysis including a cell (58) for containing the sample, a first ring (52) mounted to the cell at one open face (48) securing an analytic film (56) to the cell, a second ring (50) mounted to the cell securing a microporous or solid film (54) at the other open face (46); the second ring including a continuous ring wall extending outwardly from the rim o the cell; the continuous ring wall and the microporous film defining a compartment adjoining the second open face that contains any sample material that passes or breaks through the microporous or solid film. A support bar (92) connected to the top securing ring provides a grip for a tool used in the process of remotely raising or lowering the sample holder relative to placement into or removal from an x-ray cassette.
Abstract: A portable appliance for treating carpal tunnel syndrome and/or other problems of the wrist of a person. The appliance comprises a releasably securable sleeve means for securement to a person's forearm, a stationary member positioned on the sleeve means, a moveable member slidably coupled to the stationary member, a cuff means secured to an end of the moveable member and a bias means coupled between the stationary member and the moveable member. The bias means is provided for urging the moveable member to slide from a retracted position to an extended position thus causing the cuff means to securely engage a portion of the person's hand adjacent the person's wrist to apply a predetermined tensile load to the person's wrist in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the forearm.

Abstract: A discharge mechanism for meat-comminuting machine is disclosed, which comprises a housing structure and a discharge rotor. The housing structure defines a discharge chamber adapted to receive meat comminuted by the meat-comminuting machine, through a front mouth of the discharge chamber, and defines a back wall of the discharge chamber and a cylindrical wall thereof. The discharge rotor is arranged to be rotatably driven in the discharge chamber for discharging the comminuted meat from the discharge chamber, through an outlet of the cylindrical wall, via centrifugal force.

Abstract: Sieve with slots or holes, made from a U-shaped section, constituted by a stack of identical circles, each circle (1, 1') being made from a tapered U-shaped section of which the two ends are welded or mechanically connected to one another, characterized in that this stack of circles (1, 1') is maintained tightly between two rings (2-3, 2-'3') by a plurality of tie rods (4, 4') and in that the lateral walls of the circles in the stack rest on one another without any further fastening together, so that the walls of the sections can undergo elastic deformation under the effects of the tightening.
