Abstract: An optical detection system for measuring a refractive index of a liquid analyte comprising a light transmitting assembly fiber, which includes a single-mode fiber, an optical fiber sensing module and a multi-mode fiber. The optical detection system is configured to emit a coherent light beam to one end of the assembly fiber; and a detector is configured to capture a specklegram from an exit end of the assembly fiber. When the optical detection system is in operation, the optical fiber sensing module is configured to be submerged into the liquid analyte. By analyzing the correlation between the specklegram corresponding to the liquid analyte and the reference specklegram, the refractive index of the liquid analyte can be obtained.

Abstract: A method for scheduling a random-access communication system having high-priority (HP) and low-priority (LP) nodes is provided, where the scheduling is configured such that the system provides an absolute throughput guarantee for the HP nodes, and a proportional throughput guarantee for the LP nodes. The method is based on obtaining a length of a contention window assigned to an individual node, which is either a HP or a LP node, from a per-slot attempt rate of this individual node. In particular, the attempt rate of each individual node is determined by an algorithm configured such that a resultant sum of the per-slot attempt rates of all the individual nodes is a fixed value independent of the number of the individual nodes. By this scheduling method, the maximum system throughput is approached. The method can be advantageously used in a wireless local area network (WLAN).

Abstract: A method of detecting network intrusion based on improved support vector machine is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of identifying a plurality of features; computing information gain of each of the features; selecting a pre-determined number of features based on the computed information gain and augmenting that set of pre-determined number of features with special features to form a set of selected features; and classifying a network connection based on the selected features using support vector machine. In order to achieve better detection accuracy, cross-validation and grid-search are applied to select the radial basis function for the support vector machine.

Abstract: An optical fiber environmental detection system comprising an interferometer, a broadband light source and a detector is disclosed. The interferometer further comprises a thin core fiber, a first single mode fiber and a second single mode fiber; wherein the thin core fiber is coupled to the first and second single mode fiber via a first junction and a second junction respectively. When an emission light reaches the first junction, high-order cladding modes will be excited. The excited cladding modes will interfere with the core mode at the second junction. The interferences determine the intensity maximum or minimum of the received signal. When there is an ambient environmental change, a shift of the received signal would be induced. According to the shift, environmental change, for instance ambient temperature, could be determined.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for updating a mobile terminal (MT) for a mobile communication network when the MT crosses a boundary of a first location-update (LA) area. The method comprises determining a second LA to be assigned to the MT for replacing the first LA. The second LA is characterized by a LA center and a LA size, both determined by optimizing them in a sense that a mean total location-management cost is minimized without restricting the LA center to be fixed at the initial position. The initial position is defined as the location where the MT performs a latest location update at the first LA before crossing the boundary. This invention also provides schemes of partitioning the second LA into sub-paging areas for use in paging the MT when a call arrives at the network, so as to minimize the paging cost while satisfying delay requirements.

Abstract: A method for scheduling single-arm multi-cluster tools is provided. The present invention studies the scheduling problem of a single-arm multi-cluster tool with a linear topology and process-bound bottleneck individual tool. Its objective is to find a one-wafer cyclic schedule such that the lower bound of cycle time is reached by optimally configuring spaces in buffering modules that link individual cluster tools. A Petri net model is developed to describe the dynamic behavior of the system by extending resource-oriented Petri nets such that a schedule can be parameterized by robots' waiting time. Based on this model, conditions are presented under which a one-wafer cyclic schedule with lower bound of cycle time can be found. With the derived conditions, an algorithm is presented to find such a schedule and optimally configure the buffer spaces.

Abstract: In semiconductor manufacturing, there are wafer fabrication processes in cluster tools that need a wafer to visit some processing steps for more than once, leading to a revisiting process. Also, wafers may be subject to wafer residency time constraints. By considering atomic layer deposition (ALD) as a typical wafer revisiting process, this invention studies the challenging scheduling problem of single-arm cluster tools for the ALD process with wafer residency time constraints. By recognizing that the key to this problem is to schedule the robot tasks, the present invention presents different robot task sequencing strategies. With these strategies for different cases, the present invention performs the schedulability analysis and derives the schedulability conditions for such tools for the first time. If schedulable, the present invention proposes scheduling algorithms to obtain an optimal schedule efficiently. Illustrative examples are given to show the application of the proposed concepts and approach.
