Abstract: Techniques for initializing a connection in a peer-to-peer database replication environment. A message is received from an initiator node, indicating that the initiator node will begin replicating changes made to a particular data entity. One or more replicated changes relating to the database entity are received from the initiator node. If an updated instance of the data entity does not currently exist on a target node then one or more load operations are performed to create the updated instance. The stored replicated changes may then be processed against the updated instance of the database entity.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to evaluation and storage of data in a computer system configured with a shared pool of resources. A multi-level adaptive compression technique is employed to minimize the cost of data storage based upon the type of data being stored and their access pattern. The costs of data storage include capacity, bandwidth, and compute cycles. Data is transformed local to a client in communication with the shared pool, local to the shared pool, or as a combination with a partial transformation local to the client and a partial transformation local to the shared pool.

Abstract: A middleware platform is executable by a computer to receive a request for a service, the service provided by a service application in communication with the middleware platform. The middleware platform determines, via a device adaptation component of the middleware platform, capabilities of a device subject to the request. The middleware platform selects an interface having a format that is compatible with the capabilities of the device, and provides the interface to the device in a format corresponding to the capabilities, accesses the service application responsive to the request, processes the request, and returns a response, via the interface, to the device responsive to the processing.

Abstract: Apparatus and method are provided for facilitating cooling of an electronic component. The apparatus includes a liquid-cooled structure, a thermal conduction path coupling the electronic component and the liquid-cooled structure, a coolant loop in fluid communication with a coolant-carrying channel of the liquid-cooled structure, and an outdoor-air-cooled heat exchange unit coupled to facilitate heat transfer from the liquid-cooled structure via, at least in part, the coolant loop. The thermoelectric array facilitates transfer of heat from the electronic component to the liquid-cooled structure, and the heat exchange unit cools coolant passing through the coolant loop by dissipating heat from the coolant to outdoor ambient air. In one implementation, temperature of coolant entering the liquid-cooled structure is greater than temperature of the outdoor ambient air to which heat is dissipated.

Abstract: An automated software process for acquiring and distributing information regarding design guidelines relevant to developers of a software system. The system supports developer decisions regarding design guidelines for operational characteristics, such as “points of variability” (POV), of a system under development. Operational characteristics of the system under development are “profiled” through answers to questions reflecting the high level system design. The collected answers indicate a category of operational characteristics associated with a design guideline. A developer obtains the design guidelines appropriate for a given operational characteristic when the answers entered by the developer with regard to that operational characteristic are used to determine one of the elements in the category array. Technical leadership establishes a high-level system design, and determines questions leading to design guidelines for categories of operational characteristics of the system.
