Abstract: A series hybrid transmission includes a first motor device for driving a first shaft, a second motor device for driving a second shaft. Drive gears on the first and second shafts can be simultaneously engaged in the same or different gears and torque from the two motor devices can he multiplied. When shifting up or down, the drive gear on one of the shafts can be disengaged while the drive gear on the other one of the shafts remains engaged to avoid interruption in application of torque.
Abstract: A method is provided of operating a diesel engine having an exhaust aftertreatment system (EATS) including one or more apparatus for controlling exhaust NOX levels, the engine including a plurality of systems and components, at least some of which systems and components are adapted to be set to one or more control setpoints for one or more base actuators of the engine. The method includes establishing a plurality of engine operating modes, each operating mode differing from any other operating mode with respect to at least one control setpoint, for each operating mode, mapping fuel economy versus NOX levels exiting the EATS, selecting an operating mode from among the plurality of operating modes so that exhaust exiting the EATS contains NOX at no more than a predetermined NOX level and a least amount of fuel is consumed per unit energy; and operating the engine in the selected operating mode. An engine arrangement is also provided.
Abstract: A drive axle system can be converted between a single drive tandem axle arrangement including a rear drive axle a dual drive tandem axle arrangement. A forward bowl is provided for a forward axle system. One of a geared forward carrier and an ungeared forward carrier is mounted on the forward bowl, depending upon whether a dual drive or a single drive tandem axle arrangement is desired. To convert to the other type of tandem axle arrangement, the one of the geared forward carrier and the ungeared forward carrier is removed from the forward bowl and replaced, with the other one of the geared forward carrier and the ungeared forward carrier.
Abstract: A method is provided for detecting abnormally frequent diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration. The method includes measuring a pressure drop across the DPF and using the measured pressure drop to calculate a pressure drop based soot load estimate, calculating soot output from an engine model and using the calculated soot output to calculate an emissions based soot load estimate, comparing the pressure drop based soot load estimate with the emissions based soot load estimate, and providing a warning if a difference between the pressure drop based soot load estimate and the emissions based soot load estimate exceeds a predetermined.
Abstract: A vehicle having a multiple drive axle assembly includes a forward axle assembly including a forward interaxle differential, a forward interaxle differential input shaft and a forward interaxle differential output shaft. An intermediate drive shaft is connected to the forward interaxle differential output shaft. A rear axle assembly includes a rear differential and a rear differential input shaft. A rear clutch arrangement is provided between the intermediate drive shaft and the rear differential input shaft and is movable between a first position in which the rear clutch arrangement rotationally locks the intermediate drive shaft and the rear differential input shaft and a second position in which the intermediate drive shaft and the rear differential input shaft are rotationally disconnected. The rear axle assembly of the vehicle can be raised and lowered relative to a frame of the vehicle.
Abstract: A transmission with a countershaft brake includes a countershaft, a positive displacement pump including a pump housing having a chamber with an inlet and an outlet, the pump being driven by the countershaft, and a flow restrictor disposed at or downstream of the chamber outlet, the flow restrictor being adjustable to increase and decrease an amount of flow restriction from, the outlet of the chamber. Torque needed to drive the pump increases with an increasing flow restriction by the flow restrictor. A method for braking a countershaft in a transmission is also provided.

Abstract: A method of operating an engine includes starting and stopping operation of an internal combustion engine that includes a crankshaft having a bearing journal and a bearing in which the bearing journal is rotatable. The crankshaft is constantly turned when the internal combustion engine is in the non-fueled mode. An oil pump can be driven to lubricate the bearing journal and the bearing while the internal combustion engine is in the non-fueled mode to provide hydrodynamic lubrication. An engine is also disclosed.

Abstract: A method for operating an exhaust aftertreatment system injector to prevent coking includes steps of injecting fuel for heating the aftertreatment devices, when not injecting fuel, flowing air to purge and cool the nozzle to prevent carbon deposits when exhaust gas temperature is low, and substantially stop air flow to allow passive heating of the nozzle by the exhaust for oxidation of any accumulated carbon when exhaust temperature is high enough to support oxidation. Preferably, the nozzle has a catalytic material coating to reduce the temperature necessary for oxidation of the coking material.

Abstract: Methods and systems for controlling reductant levels in an SCR catalyst are provided. In one aspect, reductant levels are adjusted in response to a ratio of change of NOx conversion efficiency to a change of reductant level. In another aspect, reductant injection levels are periodically adjusted to see if NOx conversion efficiency is better or worse at the adjusted levels.
Abstract: In a diesel engine and exhaust aftertreatment system, a controller is arranged to control operation of the engine to obtain a first set of exhaust characteristics and to control a fuel injector to inject fuel upstream of a DPF at a first rate of injection until at least one condition is attained, and, after the at least one condition is attained, to control the fuel injector so that a rate of fuel injection is reduced and to contra! operation of the engine to obtain a second set of exhaust characteristics so that regeneration of the DPF occurs. At least one characteristic of the first and second sets of characteristics beina, different. A method for treating, diesei engine exhaust is also disclosed.

Abstract: A multi clutch transmission includes a first clutch plate mounted on a first input shaft, a second clutch plate mounted on a second input shaft arranged concentrically around the first input shaft, a third clutch plate mounted on a third input shaft arranged concentrically around the second input shaft, and a clutch housing comprising a plurality of reaction plates, the first, second, and third clutch plates being individually and selectively engageable and disengageable with reaction plates in the clutch housing. A multi clutch transmission can also include at least three countershafts arranged around the input shafts.
