  • Patent number: 7574691
Abstract: A user interface is implemented on a client device remote from a host device. The host device operates an application program that implements a user interface, such as an electronic programming guide or a guide for a personal video recorder, that permits a user to control at least one target device. The host device transfers to the client device an identification of at least one scene. In general, a scene defines an abstract layout for at least one screen display of the user interface. The client device generates at least one screen display for the scene based on its interpretation of the scene. The client device then displays the screen as an implementation of the user interface. Thereafter, a user initiates, using the client device, an operation to control the target device. In response, the target device performs the operation. The host device may also display information at a client device. For example, the host device may transmit information about a media currently playing at the client device.

  • Patent number: 7530116
Abstract: A method and apparatus for enabling a licensed end user to record digital data as described is particularly useful to the music industry as it enables them to make audio data available over the internet but to retain control of the uses to which that audio data can be put. Thus, upon completing a financial transaction to pay for the required audio tracks, the end user is enabled to download and decrypt encrypted music tracks and to play them on the end user's personal computer. The end user can also be allowed to burn a CD including the downloaded music tracks. However, the end user is only enabled to decrypt and record the music tracks onto the CD if the music tracks are recorded together with copy protection.

  • Patent number: 7492896
Abstract: Enhancements to a video anticopying process that causes an abnormally low amplitude video signal to be recorded on an illegal copy. The enhancements in one version introduce into the overscan portion of the television picture, just prior to the horizontal or vertical sync signals but in active video, a negative going waveform that appears to the television receiver or videotape recorder to be a sync signal, thereby causing an early horizontal or vertical retrace. One version provides (in the right overscan portion of the picture), a checker pattern of alternating gray and black areas which causes the TV set on which the illegal copy is played to horizontally retrace earlier than normal in selected lines with a consequential horizontal shift of the picture information on those lines. This substantially degrades picture viewability. In another version a gray pattern at the bottom overscan portion of the picture causes vertical picture instability.

  • Patent number: 7464411
Abstract: A method of copy protecting optical discs uses the differences in capability between the encoder associated with a laser beam recorder and that in currently available CD writers. Digital sum value (DSV) is a property of the encoded data on CDs and an encoder, which controls a laser beam recorder may be able to choose a pattern of merge bits which result in the overall DSV having optimal properties. During mastering of a CD, data patterns are added to the disc to provide an authenticating signature. These data patterns are chosen to cause DSV problems. Currently available CD writers have been found to have difficulty writing an authenticating signature of the type described without producing a resulting CD which has severe readability problems. Thus, the copy disc written by the CD writer will result in a CD reader returning corrupted data or information signalling a read error.

  • Patent number: 7414930
Abstract: The method and apparatus described utilise the fact that CDs manufactured from the same master will have distinctive physical characteristics attributable to the physical manufacturing process of the master to distinguish counterfeit CDs from genuine discs. For a genuine disc, the relative angular orientation of specified sections of the recorded data are determined and recorded. The relative angular orientation of the same sections of data on a test disc are also determined. Where the relative angular orientations are the same it is concluded that the test disc derives from the same source as the genuine disc and is therefore bona fide. Where there is no correlation, the test disc may be identified as counterfeit. The relative angular orientations, or other physical characteristics of the discs, may be physically measured, or may be calculated from information gained by reading the data on the disc. The disclosed technique can also be used to copy protect discs.

  • Publication number: 20080100597
Abstract: A television (TV) monitor or receiver normally displays only the active portion of a video signal, and generally the HBI (horizontal blanking interval) and/or the VBI (vertical blanking interval) are not displayed. In some TV displays however, there is provision to display at least a portion of a blanking interval (overscan area). In some displays (such as monitors for professional use) the VBI is displayed as a way to allow the user to monitor test, command, and/or reference signals. If there are added pulses such as the well known copy protection signals present in blanking intervals of the video signal that cause a horizontal (or vertical) timing or recovery circuit to result in erroneous timing, then viewing is impaired of at least one blanking interval for the TV display. For example, if added copy protection pulses in the VBI region cause the horizontal phase lock loop circuit in a TV display to cause a mistiming, then viewing of signals in the VBI (overscan area) will be impaired.
