    Abstract: Method and apparatus for encoding and decoding a stream of digital (binary) data on AGC (automatic gain control) pulses or back porch pulses of the type conventionally used for copy protection in the analog television or video realm. The data is encoded onto the tips of the AGC or back porch pulses added to blanking intervals of an analog video signal. Each pulse tip may define, for instance, 10 to 15 digital bits (1 or 0) in the form of square waves or rectangular waves with two states, high and low, representing respectively 1 and 0. In another version, the digital data is similarly encoded onto the pulse tip of back porch pulses present at the end of video fields for copy protection. This digital data conveyed in an analog signal may be read by an associated decoder in a consumer device and the resulting data decoded, for instance, for copy control, storage permission, network access, user identification, or carrying additional data, such as commentary or text relevant to the accompanying video.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for inhibiting unauthorized copying of data content of DVDs or CDs or other types of optical discs. DSV (digital sum value) data patterns are inserted into selected sectors of the data to be recorded on the optical disc. These selected data sectors are also those to which is applied the conventional CSS (content scrambling system) encryption conventionally used to copy protect DVD content. Only those sectors (e.g., one out of four) subject to the CSS encryption have the DSV data patterns inserted therein. This advantageously results in the CSS encryption effectively hiding these inserted DSV data patterns from the mastering DVD encoder used in producing DVDs. Effectively thereby the DSV data patterns “tunnel through” the mastering DVD encoder. The hidden DSV data patterns are only revealed when the CSS sectors are decrypted prior to the action of the writer used to copy the DVD/CD content.

    Abstract: Enhancements to a video anticopying process that causes an abnormally low amplitude video signal to be recorded on an illegal copy. In one version, positive going pulses are added to the video signal. The enhancements in one version introduce into the overscan portion of the television picture, just prior to the horizontal or vertical sync signals but in active video, a negative going waveform that appears to the television receiver or videotape recorder to be a sync signal, thereby causing an early horizontal or vertical retrace. One version provides (in the right overscan portion of the picture), a checker pattern of alternating gray and black areas which causes the TV set on which the illegal copy is played to horizontally retrace earlier than normal in selected lines with a consequential horizontal shift of the picture information on those lines. This substantially degrades picture viewability.

    Abstract: To copy protect an optical disc, such as a DVD, program chains additional to the main program chain are provided. These program chains may lead to the genuine data but in an incomplete or incorrect order or to false data. Sufficient additional program chains are provided to make it difficult to identify the main program chain amongst all of the program chains provided on the disc. The structure of the further program chains ape that of the main program, again to hide the main program chain. The navigation path which leads to the main program chain, and hence to the content on the DVD, is dynamically generated and at least some of the information required to generate the navigational path arises by setting parameters associated with a player or with a user. Thus a search of all of the navigation information on the disc will fail to reveal the navigation path to the content.

Thus, for example, the DSV value of the encoded data may be changed rapidly in less than (100) frames to (FIG. 9). For an area of digital data on the optical disc in which the DSV has been caused to rise steeply (FIG. 10a), heavy distortions in audio arise (FIG. 10c) during an attempt to copy an audio track including the single segment of unbalanced dc content.

    Abstract: A method of copy protecting optical discs uses the differences in capability between the encoder associated with a laser beam recorder and that in currently available CD writers. Digital sum value (DSV) is a property of the encoded data on CDs and an encoder, which controls a laser beam recorder may be able to choose a pattern of merge bits which result in the overall DSV having optimal properties. During mastering of a CD, data patterns are added to the disc to provide an authenticating signature. These data patterns are chosen to cause DSV problems. Currently available CD writers have been found to have difficulty writing an authenticating signature of the type described without producing a resulting CD which has severe readability problems. Thus, the copy disc written by the CD writer will result in a CD reader returning corrupted data or information signalling a read error.

    Abstract: The method and apparatus described utilise the fact that CDs manufactured from the same master will have distinctive physical characteristics attributable to the physical manufacturing process of the master to distinguish counterfeit CDs from genuine discs. For a genuine disc, the relative angular orientation of specified sections of the recorded data are determined and recorded. The relative angular orientation of the same sections of data on a test disc are also determined. Where the relative angular orientations are the same it is concluded that the test disc derives from the same source as the genuine disc and is therefore bona fide. Where there is no correlation, the test disc may be identified as counterfeit. The relative angular orientations, or other physical characteristics of the discs, may be physically measured, or may be calculated from information gained by reading the data on the disc. The disclosed technique can also be used to copy protect discs.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for disabling the effect of copy-protect signals placed in a recording video signals which is based on differences in the characteristics of television and VCR circuitry. Copy-protect signals include pseudo-sync pulses and/or added AGC pulses in the blanking interval of a video signal. The specific method described includes altering the level of the video signal during the vertical blanking interval, e.g., level-shifting, so as to render the copy-protect copy protection signals ineffective to prevent in preventing unauthorized copying by a VCR. A circuit for achieving the method includes a sync separator for detecting the vertical blanking interval, pulse generating circuits for producing pulses of predetermined widths during this interval, and a summing circuit for summing the predetermined pulses with copy-protect signals thereby to shift their level.
