Patent number: 10400696Abstract: A method for starting an internal combustion engine comprises the steps of: providing an internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder and a piston supported at a crankshaft for repeated reciprocal movement in the cylinder so as to define a main combustion chamber, the internal combustion engine further having an ignition device arranged in said cylinder with an igniter portion and a fuel injector which are both arranged at a pre-chamber, wherein the pre-chamber has a plurality of orifices for providing fluid communication between said pre-chamber and the main combustion chamber, injecting fuel in the pre-chamber, and igniting the injected fuel in the pre-chamber for pre-heating of the pre-chamber prior to injecting fuel in the main combustion chamber for combusting the injected fuel in the main combustion chamber.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2017Date of Patent: September 3, 2019Assignee: MAHLE POWERTRAIN, LLCInventors: Hugh Blaxill, Michael Bunce

Patent number: 9476792Abstract: A tester and method for testing for a leak in an evaporative-emissions system of a motor vehicle comprise a/an power supply, computer, display communicating with the computer, analog-to-digital board communicating with the power supply and computer, pressure sensor communicating with the board, housing into which the power supply, board, and sensor are integrated, stationary enclosure, and test connection including a hose to the enclosure. A fuel-vapor pressure-rise rate is recorded with an engine of a motor vehicle turned “off.” A value is recorded that directly correlates with an out-gassing effect created by a volume, blend, and temperature of fuel. A “purge” cycle occurs at idling of the vehicle within a short period of time. The engine applies a vacuum to a fuel-delivery system of the vehicle. Vacuum decay is recorded. A leak rate is determined by off-setting the recorded fuel-vapor pressure-rise rate with the recorded vacuum decay.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2013Date of Patent: October 25, 2016Assignee: MAHLE Powertrain, LLCInventors: Raymond D. Patent number: 9353674Abstract: An ignition system for an internal combustion engine having at least one combustion chamber where the ignition system includes a housing, an ignition device, an injector, and a pre-chamber having a nozzle disposed spaced from the proximal portion of the pre-chamber. The igniter portion of the ignition device and the nozzle of the injector are operatively supported in the proximal portion of the pre-chamber and disposed flush therewith. The igniter portion ignites the fuel in pre-chamber such that partially combusted pre-chamber products are forced through orifices in the pre-chamber nozzle and extinguish, but dispersed through the combustion chamber so as to ignite the main fuel charge therein.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2014Date of Patent: May 31, 2016Assignee: MAHLE POWERTRAIN, LLCInventors: Michael Bunce, Hugh Blaxill, William Attard

Patent number: 7878046Abstract: A test apparatus for an evaporative emission system includes a source of pressure (positive or negative), a sensor for sensing the pressure generated in the evaporative emission system, and an ECU which controls the operation of the source of pressure and receives signals from the sensor reporting the pressure in the vehicle evaporative emission system over time. The ECU compares the sensed data with the stored data representing standard baseline sample vehicles without any leaks to determine the presence of a leak in the evaporative emission system.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 2008Date of Patent: February 1, 2011Assignee: MAHLE Powertrain, LLCInventors: Louis Scott Bolt, Michael Dew

Patent number: 7801874Abstract: Reporting tools possess improved filtering, display and alerting methodologies offering enhanced versatility. According to one aspect of the invention, the method has an independent data filtering mechanism, an independent output function that populates an n-dimensional array, and an independent display function. According to a different embodiment, a set of parameterized query relationships organizes a series of data filters into a graphical representation of a parent/child hierarchy in order to execute a series of hierarchical queries where each simple query builds a final query that is complex. According to yet a further alternative embodiment, Boolean logic is used in a series of n-number hierarchical filters, and a combination of n-number outputs, to generate notification in the form of emails/messages/etc. based on data that is dynamically entered into the system.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2005Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: MAHLE Powertrain LLCInventors: Maryam Bernacki, Louis Bolt, Jeremy Moerdyke
