  • Patent number: 6796752
Abstract: A metal cutting insert having a pair of cutting portions disposed on either side of a shank portion which also includes a clamping structure engageable by a tool holder by which the metal cutting insert is held in an operative position. Each cutting portion includes a circular cutting edge that is defined by the juncture of a circular clearance surface and a frusto-conical, positive rake surface. The cutting edge is located in a common horizontal plane. A plurality of elongate spaced apart, radially directed recesses are symmetrically spaced with respect to the cutting edge and include outer ends that merge with the frusto-conical rake surface and inner ends which merge with a plateau-like surface having an upper surface located at a level higher than the cutting edge. The plateau-like surface defines a discontinuous circular edge in the form of arcuate ridges.

  • Patent number: 6742971
Abstract: A metal cutting insert having a pair of cutting portions disposed on either side of a shank portion. Each cutting portion includes a forward cutting edge and two side cutting edges. Each side cutting edge forms part of a shelf that includes chip controlling/breaking structure and is defined by the juncture of a cutting surface with an upper boundary of a side face. The chip controlling structure includes a chip deflecting surface located adjacent the side cutting surface that includes a plurality of concave recesses that generate localized stiffening of a chip as it moves along the chip deflecting surface. Chip controlling structure located adjacent the forward cutting edge includes a downwardly sloping surface that forms part of a channel which extends from the forward cutting edge towards a shank portion of the insert. A pair of ridges located on either side of the channel rise upwardly and reach a height that is above the plane of the forward cutting edge.

  • Publication number: 20030156909
Abstract: A metal cutting insert having a pair of cutting portions disposed on either side of a shank portion. Structure is formed on the metal cutting insert by which the insert is clamped to a tool holder which positions one of the cutting portions in a machining position. Each cutting portion includes a forward cutting edge and two side cutting edges. Each side cutting edge forms part of a shelf that includes chip controlling/breaking structure. Each side cutting edge is defined by the juncture of a cutting surface with an upper boundary of a side face and the chip controlling structure includes a chip deflecting surface located adjacent the side cutting surface that includes a plurality of concave recesses that generate localized stiffening of a chip as it moves along the chip deflecting surface. The forward cutting edge performs cutting operations on a rotating workpiece in a radial direction.

  • Patent number: 5085541
Abstract: A metal-cutting insert for performing cut-off and grooving operations and of the so-called self-gripping type. The insert comprises a front end with a cutting edge, first and second elongated straight grippable surfaces extending in converging relationship rearwardly from the front end and a rear end defined by first and second straight surfaces of approximately equal length that intersect each other in an included obtuse angle. The grippable surfaces each have a concave transverse contour. The first and second end surfaces extend respectively from the first and second grippable surfaces and intersect at a location to coincide with the intersection of a rear locating surface and a key-receiving aperture of a support blade when the insert is fully received within the support blade recess.

  • Patent number: 4832541
Abstract: An improved insert 10 for deep grooving, contouring and cut-off operations is disclosed which is provided with two kinds of chip-breaking projections, three in all. There are two frusto-conical projections 30 near the cutting edge 16 and there is a V-shaped projection 32 behind the frusto-conical projections. The insert expands the range of materials of the work, the groove diameters that can be cut and the feeds and speeds of operations, through improved chip control.

  • Patent number: 4744703
Abstract: A rotary cutting tool including a cutter body rotatable about a central axis and defining a plurality of recesses opening on a radial and a peripheral surface of the body. Insert support assemblies having portions extending radially from the cutter body are mounted in each recess. Each insert support assembly includes an insert support arm having a mounting portion by which the support arm is mounted to the cutter body and an insert supporting blade portion for supporting an insert a predetermined radial distance beyond the peripheral surface of the cutter body. A clamp member, secured to the cutter body, clamps the insert to the blade portion. A force generating wedge also secured to the cutter body abutably engages a surface on the clamp member and is operative to cause the clamp member to apply a clamping force to the insert. A radial adjustment acting between a wall of the associated recess and a surface on the clamp member adjusts and maintains the radial position of the clamp member.

  • Patent number: 4629372
Abstract: A metal-cutting insert (10) having a cutting edge (31) and an associated chip control surface (52). Chip configuration control is effected by means of a cutting edge formed with a transverse rake face (52) extending to the top (64) of the insert above and behind the cutting edge (31) and a rearward extending channel (50) that penetrates both the top of the insert (64) and the shelf type cutting edge (31). Additional transverse shelves (62) are formed at spaced apart locations behind the cutting edge (31). The insert (10) can be ground back to the next rearward disposed shelf (62) forming a new cutting edge with an associated chip control configuration. The rake face (52) associated with a cutting edge (31) of the insert can be coated with a suitable material such as titanium nitride. The insert (10) after grinding will still have a coated rake face associated with the new cutting edge.
