Patent number: 6068105Abstract: A pusher assembly for diverting the flow of articles on a conveyor includes a pusher arm that provides smooth engagement of the articles with minimal impact and a return path of the pusher which travels through the space previously occupied by the article being sorted. Consequently, the pusher assembly enables minimum spacing between articles on the conveyor and increases the sortation rate of the pusher assembly. The pusher assembly includes a pusher and a driver, which is coupled to the pusher. The driver moves the pusher from an initial retracted position adjacent the conveyor to a first diverting position, wherein the pusher pivots about a point spaced downstream from a downstream end of the pusher so that an upstream end of the pusher moves into contact with the side of the article. The driver further moves the pusher such that the pusher pivots about the upstream end so that the downstream end of the pusher rolls and moves into contact with the side of the article.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1997Date of Patent: May 30, 2000Assignee: Mannesmann Dematic Rapistan Corp.Inventors: Raed Y. Patent number: 6065588Abstract: A contact assembly for an accumulation conveyor includes a support member having a cavity dimensioned to receive a force producing device. A contact member is positioned between the force producing device and the conveying rollers and reciprocates with respect to the conveying rollers. The contact member includes a platform which supports a pair of cantilevered contact rollers journaled at opposing ends of the platform. When the platform is vertically reciprocated by the force-producing device, the contact rollers in driving engagement with a drive belt are forced upward, placing the drive belt into driving contact with the conveying rollers.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 1998Date of Patent: May 23, 2000Assignee: Mannesmann Dematic Rapistan Corp.Inventors: David H. Patent number: 5764014Abstract: An automated guided vehicle includes a body, at least one driver wheel for propelling the body along a surface, at least one steered wheel for directing the body with respect to the surface and a body-based inertial navigation system. The inertial navigation system senses actual movement of the body in at least three degrees of freedom. Such sensing is accomplished notwithstanding the presence of side slippage of the vehicle. This can be embodied in an automated guided vehicle having a ground track sensor which continuously senses relative movement of the vehicle with respect to the surface being traversed in order to determine an actual velocity vector of the vehicle. The ground track sensor may physically contact the surface in order to sense the relative movement or may be a non-contact sensor. The disclosed navigation system is especially useful with tugger automated guided vehicles.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1996Date of Patent: June 9, 1998Assignee: Mannesmann Dematic Rapistan Corp.Inventors: Jerome J. Patent number: 5732814Abstract: A method and device in a conveyor for preventing the collision of guide pins on a transversely moving diverting shoe with the side of the conveyor in a conveyor having an endless conveying surface comprised of a plurality of surface members on which diverting shoes are slidably mounted to permit transverse movement thereon with respect to the direction of conveyance. The diverting shoes each have a downwardly depending guide pin which engages a rail network underlying the conveying surface. Magnets are positioned near the end of a diagonally oriented rail to attract the guide pins so as to prevent the transverse momentum of the guide pins and diverting shoes from carrying them into a collision with a stopping surface of the conveyor. The magnets are so positioned that non-diverted guide pins traveling adjacent the side of the conveyor are not substantially altered from their course of travel by the magnets.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1996Date of Patent: March 31, 1998Assignee: Mannesmann Dematic Rapistan Corp.Inventors: Thomas J.
