  • Patent number: 6390709
Abstract: An adhesive dispenser includes a dispenser body having a reservoir containing an adhesive, and a tip. The tip has a guide member that extends in a first direction away from the body and is shaped to fit within a groove of a grooved flooring plank. The guide member has opposing top and bottom surfaces and opposing end surfaces. An orifice is in communication with a conduit that opens into said reservoir. An elongated channel intersects the top surface of the guide member and extends in a second direction that is substantially perpendicular to the first direction. The elongated channel has a sidewall and the orifice includes an opening that is at least partially formed in the sidewall. A method of applying adhesive into the groove of a grooved flooring plank includes the steps of inserting the guide member into the groove of a grooved flooring plank, and expelling adhesive from the reservoir though the orifice.

  • Patent number: 6114008
Abstract: A method for making a surface covering is disclosed which includes providing a surface covering having a backing layer, a foamable layer, and a design layer, wherein the design layer includes a portion of a pattern printed with at least one retarder composition. A wear layer is then provided on the design layer and the wear layer is cured. The foamable layer is thereby expanded to form a foam layer, and the pattern printed with at least one retarder composition is chemically embossed. The cured product is subsequently cooled to ambient temperature and then the top surface of the wear layer is subjected to a sufficient temperature to soften the wear layer. After being softened the wear layer is mechanically embossed with a surface texture, the embossed surface texture is set in the wear layer, and a top coat may then be provided on the embossed set wear layer. A surface covering having the various features described above is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5955521
Abstract: Ultra-violet stabilized polyvinyl resins, such as polyvinyl chloride, are disclosed. The ultra-violet stabilized polyvinyl resins comprise polyvinyl resins and a stabilizer comprising a benzylidene malonic ester of 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidinol or its derivatives. The stabilizer can be added to or dispersed within the polyvinyl resins prior to any objects or articles being formed from the resins. Also disclosed is a method to impart ultra-violet stabilization to polyvinyl resins which includes the step of adding to or dispersing within the polyvinyl resins, a stabilizer comprising a benzylidene malonic ester of 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidinol or its derivatives. The invention further includes the addition of an ultra-violet absorber such as ethane diamine, n-(2-ethoxyphenyl)-n.sup.1 -(4-ethyl phenyl) to the polyvinyl resin composition.

  • Patent number: 5891564
Abstract: The present invention discloses surface covering products and methods and an apparatus for making surface covering products. In particular, the method of the present invention includes depositing color particles on a moving carrier to form a base layer. The base layer then comes in contact with a patterned embossing device such as a roll to create a depressed or displaced pattern image on the base layer. Afterwards, accent particles or pellets are sprinkled or applied over the embossed base layer. The embossed base layer is subjected to heat and/or pressure to consolidate the accent and color particles and form a preformed mass. The preformed mass is then pressed to form a fused, texture-created structure. The surface covering products made from the process of the present invention have unique geometric patterns with well-defined grout lines or irregular decorative designs.
