    Abstract: A system for performing a standard penetration test, including a hammer assembly with a hammer and a hammer lifting device, an elevator assembly for raising and lowering the hammer assembly, a hammer sensor for sensing a position of the hammer within the hammer assembly, and an elevator sensor for sensing a position of the hammer assembly relative to the elevator assembly. A method for performing a standard penetration test, including positioning a hammer assembly at a hammer assembly ready position, sensing with an elevator sensor a reference position of a hammer assembly relative to the elevator assembly, sensing with a hammer sensor a zero position of a hammer, lifting the hammer with a hammer lifting device from the zero position to a drop position of the hammer, sensing with the hammer sensor the drop position, and dropping the hammer onto an anvil.

    Abstract: A drilling system including a drill head. The drill head defines a drill head bore and includes a drill head bore closure device. An inner core barrel and an inner core barrel retrieval device may be passed through the interior of the drill string and the drill head bore when the drill head is connected with the drill string and the drill head bore closure device is actuated to an open position. A method of wireline core drilling which includes passing an inner core barrel retrieval device through the drill head bore and into the interior of the drill string when the drill head is connected with the drill string, and removing an inner core barrel and the inner core barrel retrieval device from the interior of the drill string through the drill head bore when the drill head is connected with the drill string.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for handling pipe sections, preferably for use with a drilling head. The apparatus includes a storage bin defining a substantially fixed bin dispensing position, a transfer device for individually transferring a pipe section between the bin dispensing position and a pipe transfer position, and a handling device for individually moving the pipe section between the pipe transfer position and a drilling head interface position. The method includes presenting a pipe section to the bin dispensing position, moving the transfer device to the bin dispensing position to engage the pipe section at the bin dispensing position, transferring the pipe section with the transfer device from the bin dispensing position to the pipe transfer position, engaging the pipe section with the handling device at the pipe transfer position, and moving the pipe section with the handling device from the pipe transfer position to the drilling head interface position.
