Abstract: A seal and closure for a container end includes a metal foil seal having a cylindrical part sealed to the inner surface of the container adjacent the end, a transverse diaphragm part recessed inwardly from the end, and a tear tab on the diaphragm. An annular groove is formed in the cylindrical part between the container end and the diaphragm, the groove defining a tear line so that the membrane and the inward portion of the cylindrical part separate from the remainder thereof when the tear tab is pulled. An insertable lid covers the seal.
Abstract: A pull-tab can closure of a thin metal foil membrane less than 0.15 mm. thick is provided with a peripheral scoreline for easy opening. The provision of a peripheral scoreline in a thin metal foil membrane is made possible by providing a flexible portion of the membrane parallel to and inside the radius of the scoreline. The flexible portion may be in the form of an inclined area relative to the scoreline or in the form of one or more concentric groove-like convex areas inside the radius of the scoreline. A method of making the closure and stamping means having a beveled score-forming edge are also disclosed.
Abstract: The exposed edge of a box is covered by placing a strip of heat-shrinkable PVC around the box so that it projects axially beyond the box edge and heating the strip so that the projecting portion shrinks and bends over the box edge, covering it. The projecting portion can be made to project far enough so that, when the strip shrinks and bends, a portion protrudes inwardly beyond the box edge. That protruding portion is then pressed against the inner box wall by a fitted lid or mandrel. A second strip can then be applied in similar fashion and shrunk to form a guarantee seal between the box and lid. An end of the second strip is left free to provide a seal tearing grip.
Abstract: A rupturable seal for a container of the type having an insertable lid wherein the seal constitutes a membrane having a cylindrical portion extending into the open end of the container to beyond the insertion depth of the lid, the upper edge of the cylindrical portion being adhered to the inner surface of the container, the seal having a transverse portion extending across the interior of the container to close it. A tear strip surrounds the cylindrical portion between it and the inner surface of the container and protrudes through an opening in the cylindrical portion to form a holding flap which can be pulled, after the lid is removed, to rupture the membrane which is then removed. An upper portion of the membrane wraps over the open edge of the box to form a protective covering therefor which remains. In an alternative embodiment the tear strip extends around the inner surface of the cylindrical portion and is adhered thereto.
