Abstract: An electrothermal chemical cartridge with a fuse of tapering cross section enables higher impulse energy to be imparted to a projectile by means of complete controlled burning of propellant. A long, narrow tube filled with propellant has a fuse on its inside surface with a cross section that tapers toward the discharge end, separated from the electrical ground of the cartridge casing by a layer of insulation sufficiently thin to be destroyed as the fuse ignites the propellant. A high-voltage electrode connected at the back end of the tube provides for application of a pulse of sufficient current density to ohmically heat or burn the fuse in a controlled fashion from the discharge end to the back end. Many such tubes can be bundled together in a large casing for wide barrel guns.
Abstract: A method and system for improving the capability of a surface of an organic structure to bond with another material includes irradiating a target area of the surface of a structure with pulsed, incoherent optical energy having wavelength components which range from 160-5000 nanometers at an intensity sufficient to photodecompose any adventitious organic substances on the surface and to photodecompose a thin layer of molecular bonds forming the surface of the structure; and exposing the target area of the surface to ionized gas that chemically reacts with the target area of the surface to increase the surface free energy of the surface.

Abstract: A capacitor-charging series resonant mode, high voltage power supply (SRMPS) (10) includes a switching network (30) that alternately applies a positive and negative voltage to a series resonant circuit, comprising a resonant capacitor and inductor. The inductor may include the primary winding (14) of a power transformer (12). The switching action occurs at a fixed frequency above the audible range. This frequency is approximately the resonant frequency of the series resonant circuit. The switching action causes sine wave quantums of current of alternating phase to flow through the primary winding. Secondary windings (16) of the transformer are coupled through a suitable rectifying network (18) to charge a load capacitor C.sub.L to a high voltage. During a first mode of operation the load capacitor is charged at a maximum rate. During a second mode, the load capacitor is charged only as needed to maintain a desired charge thereon.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for the detection and quantitation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) utilizing sample preparation by treatment with predetermined quantities of sulfuric acid and lower alkane, in which the alkane--extracted phase is subjected to chromatographic separation of PCB components (116) and electron capture detection of the separated PCB components (118), and in which the detector response is analyzed by pattern recognition comparison (316) for determination and quantitation of PCB's presented in the sample with stored data for standard PCB mixtures.
